Dcat just not himself

Our gorgeous boy is just not being himself at all. He has gum disease and gets a steroid injection every 2 months for it as well as a month of steroid pills. Usually 2 or 3 days after the tablets are finished we can see his mouth is bothering him and he becomes very quiet and doesn't move so I get him booked in for his next injection. So took him to get his jab on Monday and they said he has lost 4kilos which i think it a massive amount. He is a big boy and I did think he looked quiet thin (for him) but the vet wasn't concerned at all about the weight loss. He got his injection and off we went. Usually a day after the injection he is up and back to himself but he is just lying around not even wanting to eat. Just worried it's something more than sore gums

poor boy can he be tempted to eat with loads of lick e licks and tuna- i have relied on this when breadcat has been "off"
Have also roasted a chicken for her but then I am a bit of a slave

I’d take him back. Not impressed with your vet not taking your concern seriously. 4kg is a lot even for a big boy and if he’s not perking up as usual then it warrants a closer look.

Poor beautiful boy. I can recommend Liquivte - it's liquid food that's very palatable and high calorie. It works to get Elton back in the groove if he's off his food and feeling poorly. It might be best to check back with the vet though as he does look very sad

I'd go back and ask around for a different vet's opinion and for them to investigate the cause of weight loss. Hope he is better soon x

Toddlerteaplease · 18/12/2024 22:17

Can he have his teeth out if he has gum disease. If must be miserable having a sore mouth

AltitudeCheck · 18/12/2024 22:27

I'd get them to recheck that weight loss, our big cat is 5.5kg when he's at his healthy weight, a 4kg loss just doesn't seem possible, he'd have to have been a very very big cat to begin with.

If he hasn't eaten at all get him back ASAP, cats can develop liver/ pancreas issues after a period without eating.

Our poor boy has stomatitis (all teeth removed but still gets flare ups) and IBD and is currently on an in patient stay at the vets which I feel could have been avoided if he'd been seen earlier.

Are sure he's lost 4kg and not 4lbs? 4kg is the weight of an average adult cat!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/12/2024 03:59

Also would like to check the 4kg weight loss. What was his previous weight?

3kidsaremorethanenough · 20/12/2024 19:24

Hi everyone thank you so much for the advice. I took him back, got a different vet, who was a bit surprised that he was let go without arranging to bring him back for bloods to be done again with the weight loss( which was 4lbs not 4kilos I might have misheard her!) So it looks like he is low in iron and he has a heart murmur but his gums had been bleeding quite bad. So they've given him a supplement to put in his food. I have to say he is a bit more alert today, came looking for his breakfast this morning and went outside for his little sit down watching the birds but still sleeping a lot. We are hand feeding him cooked chicken and giving him ice cubes to lick to get some fluid into him. I had forgotten about the lickylix he does like them so have got a box of them for him too. Hopefully now he'll improve. Very grateful for your advice. Thanks

OP so glad you got a second opinion!

My vet grows concerned when my little cat loses a couple of hundred grams because quote “that’s almost 10% of her body weight” - never mind FOUR BLOODY KILOGRAMS / POUNDS.
