Cat friendly/safe ways to make my home smell nice.

3 cats all use litter trays. They are all completely emptied and bleach washed daily. In the summer I have the windows open but in winter or when I'm out we can't. What's a cat safe way to keep my house smelling nice when there's a poo smell and sometimes urine smell when I get in. Thanks

I guess the first question is where do you keep your litter trays? Mine is in the spare room and I keep the door barely open, busy enough for her to get in and out.

Secondly what litter are you using? I'm using Cats Best original and find the smell gets absorbed very quickly. I do only have one cat though.

I have a room diffuser in my hallway, the litter tray smell kind of stays in her room, all I smell when I come in is the diffuser. I'm not sure how animal friendly it is, but it's high up in top of the door frame. I just get the £6 one from Sainsbury's, scent amber I think.

Have you tried litter trays with roof and flap door?

Wooden pellets (huge bag delivered every month from Amazon) changed my life. Eco friendly and safe too. Having a litter with a top as well and getting rid of the poo every day. The litter is in dining room, does not smell at all. Hope it helps !

Blueuggboots · 07/12/2024 22:14

I have three litter trays - 2 covered and 1 open. I use tigerino litter and whilst it smells a bit when I'm changing it, I can't smell it the rest of the time. I scoop it every 2 days and change it every two weeks....
Bleaching the trays every day is madness??!

Lila34830 · 07/12/2024 22:16

Agree with PP, bleaching everyday might make things worse too and it's super toxic for your cats ... the type of litter might be the issue. Since I changed to pellets a couple years ago it changed my life !

stormsandsunshine · 07/12/2024 22:17

Yeah I reckon you should switch your litter.

We now use Greenwoods. I remove poo and clumps twice a day and the tray does not smell at all. The rest of the litter certainly doesn’t need completely changing every day - once a week is more than adequate (and even that seems overkill as it doesn’t really smell).

You must be spending a fortune on litter if you are completely refilling 3 trays every day!

INeedAnotherName · 07/12/2024 22:22

I always think bleach has a faint whiff of urine about it so maybe you are getting that. It's also bad for cats.

Try using a different litter. I use a mix of two, one is a clumping one and the other is an anti bac one which helps with the smells. I scoop as soon as I notice a wee/poop but only wash the tray once a fortnight since using the mixed litter.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 07/12/2024 22:24

We use Catsan and scoop poos right away, dig it over after a wee. The only time it smells is immediately after a poo. The whole tray is tipped out, washed in hot soapy water, and refilled every Saturday. (We have three trays for one cat but he generally uses the same one.)

Clarice99 · 07/12/2024 22:27

I have 4 litter trays, Modkats, and use good quality clumping litter. Poo and wee is scooped out, bagged, disposed of several times a day (3 cats). Loads of people comment at how lovely my house smells, that you'd never know I have 3 cats etc.

It sounds as though you need to swap the litter you're using for clumping type, change the litter trays for deeper, covered trays and regularly scoop the cat waste, especially poo as soon as possible.

Poo smells. Period. If it's possible, it's best to get rid cat waste asap (very difficult if you're out all day at work). Also, cats like a clean litter box. If their litter trays are not clean, it can lead to inappropriate toilet habits.

I'd maybe start by looking at the litter and diets.

Admittedly we currently only have one cat but, apart from scooping poos every other day, we don't change the litter more than once a week and it definitely doesn't smell. What litter do you use and how many trays do they have? Where are trays sited,?

Do they eat wet food and if so, which one?

I think I'd try and eradicate/reduce the smell at the source rather than attempting to mask it with chemicals.

Crudd99 · 08/12/2024 13:26

Thanks everyone I'm going to look at changing their litter to a clumping one.I use pets at home wood pellets at the moment and they eat purina one sensitive as this supposed to reduce the smell of their poo.

We use corn litter from Amazon. 4 cats and people assure us the house doesn’t smell.

Using bicarb like shake and vak works well. Leave it for 20 mins then hoover up. Refreshes carpets and rugs nicely.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 08/12/2024 13:35

Use white vinegar rather than bleach. (The vinegar smell dissipates quickly.)

Blueuggboots · 08/12/2024 14:12

My cats are raw fed too which is meant to help with smell and volume.

Gatekeeper · 08/12/2024 14:17

I use Cat's Best cat litter and while it is expensive it is worth EVERY penny. I only need fully empty and out wash every 2- 3 weeks and even when my head is right in there I can't smell it...it is that good!

I used bicarb on my carpet (admittedly the carpet is very old ) I was left with am orange stain for my troubles .

The bleach smell might make them try and over power it .

I read online and use liquid detergent in a spray bottle (biological) to pre treat and use a cat friendly carpet shampoo in the Vax.

2 cats , 2 huge trays , scoop whenever it is used or we see it has been dug at .

The girl doesn;'t bury , the boy does .

Are you sure this is non-toxic to cats? Lemon is toxic and they hate the smell.

For the OP, we often simmer coffee on the stove with nutmeg. It fills the whole house with a really beautiful smell!
