Keeping cat in living room overnight

usually we have a door at the bottom of the stairs so we shut our cat downstairs at night. We don’t have a door on atm as a new one is being fitted tomorrow. I can’t let my cat have run of the house at night because he keeps me awake and if he can get to my closed bedroom door he pulls the carpet up trying to get in and we have had new carpet put down recently.

DH says we will have to shut him in the living room and I guess he’s right because there’s no other option unless we want to be awake all night and have a shredded carpet. He would have his bed, litter tray, food and water and a cozy blanket on the couch as well. I am worried that he will be stressed being shut away to one room. It’s only for 1 night so I do know I’m just being silly. But wanted to hear reassurance as well from other people that it’s absolutely fine and not cruel

My cats, I have had many have always slept in the lounge overnight. They always gave access to food, water and litter tray and it has never been s problem.

I always did this from kitten-hood and this is their domain 😉

Sorry for typos, passenger in car 😂

I've always done the same. It's never been an issue with any cats I've owned.

We’ve always done this as well. Cat will no doubt be asleep for 99% of the time anyway.

Four of mine are in the living room overnight. They sleep peacefully and mooch around for a bit, have food, water and litter tray. Cat five bullies one of the other four so is segregated at night - he too has food, water and litter tray. Two of the three upstairs bedrooms are closed, the downstairs bedroom is open to him, he mostly sleeps on my bed with me. You do whatever works.

It’s worth a go - it’s only for one night. One of mine would be fine, the other would spend the entire night scratching to get out (and before now has managed to open doors!)

NotMeNoNo · 04/12/2024 20:21

If the positions were reversed, would the cat shut you in a room overnight so he could sleep undisturbed? Of course he would! Your cat will be fine.

Our cat has been shut in the living room for the last 13 years at night. She’s fine, knows her routine and no
complaints 😊

Our two are in living room overnight -two sofas with their favourite blankets, a cat tree, cushion in large window seat, water and 2 litter trays. They also have access to their catio but no other rooms. They are absolutely fine and settle really well. My DH has an early start so doesn’t disturb them and they are happy until DD lets them out at a more reasonable time for breakfast.

I worry that he will be unsettled and scratch at the door all night but I won’t know obviously because I’ll be upstairs asleep. I hate the thought of him being distressed locked away. But unsure if I’m just worrying for no reason

I once (unintentionally!) shut a cat on my wardrobe overnight. It was in my room so I would have heard any distress, but there wasn't a peep until I went to get dressed the next morning. The only issue was very hairy clothes.

Haha this reminds me of when my cat sometimes gets into the wardrobe and I can’t find them and I’m running around the house calling their name and they just stay completely silent while I lose my mind 😂

He might be annoyed with you but one night isn’t going to hurt him. Just make sure food is the opposite side of the room from the litter tray and put any small trinkets away in case he decides to get bratty 😂

Housefullofcatsandkids · 04/12/2024 21:06

My cats occasionally get locked in the office or a bedroom overnight by accident and they're absolutely fine. They just start miaowing when they hear movement in the morning to let me know they're there lol!

gamerchick · 04/12/2024 21:11

Probably be fine as long as there's no carpet down. Maybe put tinfoil around the sofa to protect it.

What's the worst that can happen? A protest dump or something. It's just one night.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 04/12/2024 21:18

We're having building work done atm so our cat is locked away in the spare room most days - she's a house cat and I can't trust the builders not to leave a door open!

She has food, water, litter tray and plenty of places to sleep. We give her the run of the house at night. She's absolutely fine!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/12/2024 21:22

Our boy is shut in the kitchen overnight - otherwise he is a complete pest. He has a cat tree, a bed, and my office chair at the table which has a cosy blanket on it, his litter tray, water, any food he didn’t finish, and a wicker basket of toys. Sometimes whoever goes in first finds a load of toy mice scattered around the room, but mainly he just sleeps.

Oh my god - this is the ultimate answer! From now on whenever I am torturing myself about if I'm being a bad owner I will just ask myself - what would Elton do?!
