Advice please - kidney failure in cat

Hey everyone

My cat is 10 and is displaying all the signs of kidney failure (drinking lots & urinating all over the house 😩)

My last cat had this too but not until much much older. Around 17.

I know the treatment is limited but there are some medications to help/ slow it a little rather than cure it.

my question is - what can I do here? He is weeing on the bathroom floor up to 4x a day (his litter tray is in there and he’s not using it for wee only poo). The bathroom smells so bad as it’s starting to seep under the LVT into the boards underneath.

from my recollection with our last cat - the treatment (renal food mostly) didn’t really stop existing issues just made sure they didn’t get any worse.

hes such a happy loving little thing otherwise - how can I stop him from doing this? I’m hoping we’d get at least another few years out of him but we’d literally have to rip the entire bathroom out at this point if we can’t stop the habit 😩

any advice? Thanks

My cat has CKD and doesn't wee outside the litter tray so I wouldn't be certain it's down to that. Have you had his wee tested as it may be he has a urine infection - I think that's a more common cause of inappropriate weeing especially in boy cats.

I would get a vet check done as well. I lost my beloved Boycat to CKD at 8, and he never wee'd out of the tray. But he DID lose weight quite rapidly, lost his appetite and his coat started to go a bit spiky & manky. He also started to get a bit confused & showing dementia type symptoms e.g. yelling out for no reason then quietening down when he heard my voice etc.

The increased drinking & peeing can be CKD, but also it could be a UTI as the pp above said, or it could be diabetes or hyperthyroid. Only the vet can tell after tests.

Are you sure he isn't weeing to mark territory, even when they've been neutered years later they can still carry on wanting to mark territory especially if they have got a whiff of new tom cats about outside. But having had several kidney failure cats over the years not one has stopped using there littte tray. The problem is once they start they don't usually stop especially boys neutered or not

Interesting that the outside litter tray wasn’t a problem for others.

It was for our older cat but she had thyroid and kidney so maybe why.

Will definitely get a urine test done by the vet this week if I can.

Don’t think it’s territory marking. It’s only the bathroom and it’s puddles of wee.

I’m also not sure if he’s lost weight but he does seem to be eating a lot.

My other cat the weight loss was significant but seemed to suddenly appear (if that makes sense - I think where you see them everyday you don’t notice the small changes daily until it’s obvious sort of thing)

Has he been diagnosed by a vet? Lots of conditions can cause weight loss and inappropriate urination - you need to get him checked over before doing anything.

Only one of ours ever had kidney failure but he went outdoors and never in the house.
