My Darling Girl Was Put To Sleep Yesterday - Did I Do The Right Thing

This really. My beautiful, darling Gizmo collapsed yesterday. I rushed her to the vet immediately and they said she was having a Pulmonary Embolism. Her legs were cold and her breathing very poor, they said there was nothing more they could do. She was only 13. I've no children or family so she was literally my entire world and I'm broken. I've been awake all night crying and wondering if there was anything else that could have been done. I'm so lost without her.

I'm so sorry. I've got dogs rather than cats but I can tell you right now you have done the right thing.

It's the hardest part of having pets, but it's part of the responsibility we take on. Your lovely girl has gone to sleep and she's not had to suffer. Letting them go always hurts like hell but it was the right decision. You will miss her dreadfully but the pain will ease.

hepsitemiz · 27/11/2024 08:48

Oh my god. First of all, my heart goes out to you. Second of all, you did the most selfless thing and spared Gizmo needless pain and stress even though it broke your heart. Third of all, 13 is a great age!

My sympathies, OP

I'm so sorry for your loss, it sounds like a really traumatic experience for you. A house always feels really quiet and empty without pets. You did the right thing, the vet would've told you if there were other options, but sometimes it's best to let them go so they're not in pain anymore. We had to say goodbye to our cat on Monday and I miss her so much, but it was the kindest thing for her.

Bagpuss1200 · 28/11/2024 09:24

Thank you all for your support. The house is so very very empty without her. I have been reading up on pulmonary embolism and I'm relieved that her got her to the vets so quickly. RIP my darling girl. 💔

I am so very very sorry for your loss. They leave such a hole don’t they. You did absolutely the right thing for her but you have my deepest sympathy ❤️❤️❤️

Toddlerteaplease · 28/11/2024 10:07

It was absolutely the right thing. Sorry you've lost her.

Sunshineandrainbow · 28/11/2024 10:13

You absolutely did the right thing, cats live in the moment and she is having a lovely sleep now.

I have had to do it and it takes a while to move on a bit but you will, just give it time.

afaloren · 28/11/2024 11:27

I’m so sorry for your loss. You gave her a great life and have done her a final kindness.

I lost a much loved cat at 4 years old to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) It sounds quite likely that this was the same thing. Indi just suddenly threw a blood clot, one leg paralysed and screaming in pain. He was stabilised but the vet warned me it was highly likely to happen again - and it did 4 weeks later, total paralysis and a run to an emergency vet in the middle of the night where we had to let him go.

You did absolutely the right thing and the most kind too. It’s an absolutely normal part of grief to question whether you did the right thing, but please take some comfort knowing that although Gizmo would never have recovered, she was clearly deeply loved right until the end.

I lost his brother at 13 five weeks ago to an unrelated issue, so I know exactly how you feel. I couldn’t even look at photos without sobbing. You are still very raw and probably thinking, “If only” but each day you will feel a little bit better. The sadness doesn’t go for a long time, but the unbearable rawness you are feeling will gently ease.

From a fellow cat lady, thinking of you today. Xx

murasaki · 28/11/2024 23:20

Oh sweetheart, it was the final gift that you could give. To stop her having more pain. You did the right thing, for her, not you, and that is the mark of a good pet custodian.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 28/11/2024 23:29

I'm so sorry. And yes, you did the right thing for her.

SparrowSkies · 28/11/2024 23:39

OP, you sound like such a lovely pet custodian and Gizmo was lucky to have you in her life. You did the right thing.

It’s so hard to lose a pet and especially so suddenly and traumatically. You poor thing, your grief will be raw… but I hope you can find comfort in happy memories…

desperatedaysareover · 28/11/2024 23:44

How lucky Gizmo was to be so much loved and to leave this realm with someone who loved her right there at her side. Our affectionate gentle little cat was discovered to have died alone a neighbours garden. I feel guilty even now and wish I'd been with her even if the vet said I couldn't have saved her. So while I 100% get the guilt you have got to know you did NOTHING wrong at, quite the opposite in fact. She'd have sensed you and been comforted. Cats really do steal a bit of your soul, be good to yourself x

livanlaterlaterlater · 28/11/2024 23:48

Am so sorry that you had to make this decision .Just be comforted that you chose the best option for your beloved pet .
I have gone through this horrible time and am now feeling OK about it. Sending love to you. X

TheBluntTurtle · 29/11/2024 05:21

Aww OP I’m so sorry for your loss. That sounds really traumatic and a horrible decision to make. I do think you did the right thing. My big 10 year old Tom cat Jazz (full name princess jasmine as I named him when I was 7 and thought he was a girl 🙈) had a pulmonary embolism and we made the decision to put him to sleep as there was nothing the vets could do. It was really upsetting seeing him in so much pain and distress and it came suddenly out of nowhere - he was fine earlier on in the day so I know what a shock it will have been for you and your little Gizmo.
This shock and grief will take a while to come to terms with so please be kind to yourself OP and know you were the best owner for your lovely Gizmo. X
