My girl is dying

Just wanted some company with it really!

She's old and increasingly scrawny, we adopted her 15 years ago and I can barely remember a time without her.

She's stopped eating and taken herself off to a corner. Back from the vet where they felt a mass in her abdomen. She was fine until a few days ago and it's been a bit of a rapid decline.

I've brought her home and want her to just go peacefully if possible. Of course if she gets distressed I'll take her in.

My poor old lady.

I’m so sorry, OP.

💐

Bongosbanjo · 26/11/2024 14:40

At least she's had 15 good years with you and knows she's loved. It not any consilation at the moment but in time you can look back n laugh at when she got herself stuck on the roof or brought a live rabbit in. 💐

CoolPlayer · 26/11/2024 14:48

Sending hugs to you both x

Purpleavocado · 26/11/2024 14:50

Sending you love, I'm sure she's had a lovely life with you x

purpleme12 · 26/11/2024 14:51

Oh my god I'm so sorry 😓😓😓

ChocolateLemsip · 26/11/2024 14:53

I'm sorry, it's awful. The vet can sometimes come out to you. Might be kinder than waiting. Hope her final days are peaceful. 💔

Shoezembagsforever · 26/11/2024 14:53

Sending hugs to you and your lovely cat.

I'm sure she's spending her time reflecting on how loved and lucky she's been to have you as her humans.,.

Isometimeswonder · 26/11/2024 14:53

It's the shit part of loving a pet. I'm sorry @Swearwolf, it really is hard. Just try to be with her when she goes, so her last seconds are with her loved one x

Greenbeanmcgee · 26/11/2024 14:55

I’m sorry that you’re both going through this but Please have the vet put her to sleep. It’s much more humane and cats are very good at masking pain.

Greenbeanmcgee · 26/11/2024 15:01

Some vets are able to do it at home.

follygirl · 26/11/2024 15:07

If the car is hiding then it means that they are in pain. Please let the vet put her to sleep.

viques · 26/11/2024 15:13

She has given you 15 years of unconditional love OP, the least you can do is give her the gift of a gentle death. Be very honest and ask yourself who is benefitting from prolonging her pain. Please call the vet today, she could collapse at any moment and suffer a prolonged and distressing ( for both of you) death.

I came to say the same. If she's hiding, she's probably in pain. It's absolutely horrible to have to make the decision. But she needs you to do it sooner rather than later.

LemonPanda · 26/11/2024 15:32

So sorry to hear this. It sounds like she's had a very happy life with you x

Branconche · 26/11/2024 15:50

Aw I'm so sorry, it is so upsetting when they are on their way out.
When we were weighing up whether or not to get our cat put down when she was very unwell, I got really helpful advice on here.

One person advised that eating is often the last instinct to go, so even when they are on their way out and suffering they still have the instinct to eat - so don't be deceived that this is a sign of health.

Another poster said in terms of euthanasia "better a week too early than an hour too late" - the longer she is alive the more she will suffer and you have the power to take that pain away before it is overwhelming.
Sending hugs x

Swearwolf · 26/11/2024 16:48

Thanks everyone. I did ask the vet this morning if she was fine to come home and the vet said she was, now of course I'm second guessing that decision.
She's not tucked away, not really - she's in the spot she always sits when I'm working, next to the window by my desk. She always likes to be close to me and this is where we spend most of our days as I wfh.

I’d make a date soon as in a day or two . She’ll be suffering even if she doesn’t show it. A natural death is rarely a pleasant one for a cat. And vets unfortunately often seem reluctant to suggest putting them to sleep even if it’s blatantly obvious that it’s in their best interests. As you said she’s deteriorating rapidly and it’s best for them to go before the worst of the illness really starts to show.

Swearwolf · 26/11/2024 20:38

You were all right, we took her in just before they closed tonight. She was gone before the syringe was half empty. My poor little girl, she was the absolute sweetest.

I'm sorry, OP, it was her time and I'm so glad she had you by her side.

Greenbeanmcgee · 26/11/2024 20:45

I’m so sorry that you’ve lost your sweet girl but thank you for giving her the best possible end and for continuing to be the wonderful incredibly loving owner to her that you’ve always been. 💐

She must have been ready, but of course you weren't ever going to be. Go easy on yourself and know you've done your best for her.

Frenchie01 · 26/11/2024 20:58

God bless her 🙏 been through this many times 💔she's now at rainbow bridge 🌈 xx

FionnulaTheCooler · 26/11/2024 21:02

Well done for making the right decision OP, I know how hard it is. We had a cat PTS in similar circumstances and she was also gone before they had even finished injecting her, in hindsight we left it too long but I was in denial about her declining quality of life, as previous posters have said, cats are very good at masking pain. Sorry for the loss of your beautiful girl.

viques · 26/11/2024 21:19

@Swearwolf , thank you for taking that hard decision, you have so many wonderful memories of your girl, they will help to fill the gap she has left.

She had the happiest 15 years with you and the rest of the Wolfpack, she was a lucky girl.

TheBluntTurtle · 29/11/2024 05:04

I’m so sorry for your loss OP. It’s a horrible decision to make but you did the best thing you could have for your little girl. Be easy on yourself and take all the time you need to grieve - she was a much loved member of your family x
