What’s going on in his tiny brain?

I’m puzzled by my cat’s odd eating patterns. Every now and then (probably every two months) he goes on hunger strike. Doesn’t touch his food for two or three days. Just as I am at the point of taking him to the vet he starts eating normally again. While he’s not eating he’s very, very clingy, never off my knee and constantly meowing. He will still eat treats just won’t touch his food. He’s very fussy at the best of times and only eats Whiskas poultry (I have tried better food, he doesn’t like it). What’s going on? I wondered about hairballs but a) he never grooms himself and b) no evidence of hairballs coming out. Here’s my cat tax:

No advice, just wanted to admire your gorgeous kitty!
Hope he is okay!

I'd be catching his own food?

Toddlerteaplease · 22/11/2024 13:01

Is he*

Might be worth keeping a note in your phone to see could it be a pattern. Cats aren't great at telling us they are in pain. I would be taking him for a once ove just incase.

And he is stunning.

I highly doubt it. We think he might have caught a mouse once. He’s not interested in birds.

Mine does the same. Every so often seems to go on hunger strike and then goes through a couple of days at wanting food at 3 in the morning. I put it down to the fact cats are just weird little things that do what they want.

Mine doesn't have fur balls either - although she sometimes eats grass.

This is she

Intermittent fasting??

AltitudeCheck · 22/11/2024 13:49

Does he go outside? Is it possible someone else is feeding him or he's eating something that doesn't agree with him occasionally? Mine has been known to steal food, we've found a ziploc bag with someone's cheese sandwiches, a frozen chip bag with a few chips (still frozen) inside and a huge crust from a cornish pasty dragged though the cat flap and left in the kitchen.

Toddlerteaplease · 22/11/2024 13:51

Does he usually do this on the Friday evening of a bank holiday weekend? We know they like to cause as much difficulty as possible.

Chemenger · 22/11/2024 13:54

He does go outside. No evidence of food theft but we are surrounded by holiday lets and second homes so it is possible he’s getting food from visitors. He is shameless about assuming any open door is an invitation.

What a beautiful cat!! Mine also does the same thing, turns her nose up at food for a couple of days then eats normally again. I always assume it's something I've done wrong for Her Highness (wrong bowl, two minutes after normal feeding time, not placed south west of the water bowl, room temperature slightly off)

Ha! Yes .
New Years Eve one year had us phoning the Cats Insurance Info for a consultation ( he didn't need an Emergency Vet thankfully but I was searching )

Little git !

Mine does this and I always end up ‘resetting’ her tastebuds with some fresh chicken or ham. After a couple of days she goes back to her regular food.

StormingNorman · 22/11/2024 14:37

He is gorgeous!

Cats are funny little things. Does he do a big poo before he starts eating again?

Sometimes my cat does this if she’s constipated.

fivebyfivebuffy · 22/11/2024 14:38

I mean mine licks windows and eats plastic, and will take his tablets out my hand so.. might just be cat logic

I don’t know, he goes outside to poo. He did have a fit of the zoomies at the end of his most recent hunger strike so that might have been after a good “clear out”. Next time I might try him with some oily sardines to see if that gets things moving, as it were.
