Questioning advice from vet re euthanasia

My cat was hit by a car last week and was very badly injured. Took him to the emergency vet. Left in no doubt that his injuries might mean a v poor outcome and felt sad but agreed that they might need to euthanise. We were very clear that we didn't want him to suffer and be in more pain.

However, over the next few days he got stronger, had surgery, responding well to treatment and vets talking about him coming home.

Late last night locum vet calls, says that cat has deteriorated and unlikely to survive the night and pushed us to euthanise. The vet said he was finishing his shift soon so we needed to decide quickly. We felt under pressure and asked to wait until the morning but gave permission to do what they needed to do if he got worse over night. We absolutely didn't want him suffering.

Then this morning, another call from a different vet. Cat is doing well but they think requires further surgery but definitely survivable with a good quality of life. We ask about the euthanasia conversation the night before - vet confused about we're talking about and says that's not on the cards. Vet goes to speak with colleague comes back with no solid answer on the earlier euthanasia conversation but now says all further treatment including surgery won't be charged.

I've been clear throughout that I don't want my cat to suffer necessarily and that euthanasia might be the best option. And I know things change quickly. But I'm also cynical. It seems strange to go from euthanasia conversation to less than 12 hours later saying not only that he'll have a good outcome but that all future treatment is free.

I feel that the locum vet made a mistake and the practice is trying to cover it up by covering the costs of additional treatment. (We're talking thousands of pounds as reached insurance limit).

Am I being too untrusting and cynical? Is this just what happens? What do others think?

I'd be very pleased to hear all further treatment was free. I hope your cat can get better and live a happy rest if his life. It does sound a bit off but they clearly now are trying to do the right thing.

It very much sounds like they’re trying to rectify the error made by the locus that could have had an awful outcome for you, whilst not explicitly admitting liability. I hope your cat is ok and that he makes a good recovery.

Really weird. I hope your cat is ok.

Thanks all. I feel reassured that it's not just me who finds it strange. I think I'm going to wait and see how treatment goes over the next few days and then follow it up again. I don't want to make a complaint as the care has generally been excellent, but do want to understand what happened.

And thanks for the well wishes.
