Two cats both wormed up to date with all vaccine fleas etc but my issue is that they seem to eat an excessive amount of cat food I seem to spend all day going between the food bowl. For reference they've had 45 pouches between them in 3 days thats on average 7.5 80g pouches a day plus a little dry food which they don't seem to really eat. At each serving they would have two pouches each and I seem to be feeding them 4 times a day. Both mature adult males. Its hard to tell of they are overweight as one male has quite thick fur the other is average and not overweight I would say. How much do you feed yours in a typical day? Pic of the one with the thicker fur for size

I feed my cat wet food twice a day and have dry food once a day ( in her bowl so she can eat that when she likes). 7 does sound like a lot to me.

worrisomeasset · 21/11/2024 09:16

If they’re not overweight now, they will be soon on this 7.5 pouches a day diet. Maybe try giving them less food? Mine has 2 pouches a day with a third meal consisting of a sprinkling of dry stuff.

SatinHeart · 21/11/2024 09:21

Vet told me that a healthy weight is when you can feel their ribs but not see them. So if you run your hands down their sides, can you feel any ribs?

Mine is healthy weight and eats 3 pouches a day, occasionally 4 if it's s cold out (no dry food though).

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/11/2024 09:34

Ours get two to three pouches each a day - four rarely, plus dried food, plus anything they catch, or steal from us.
7.5 pouches a day sounds completely over the top and while the photo might be misleading your cat does look a bit rotund there.

Overtheatlantic · 21/11/2024 09:37

Mine gets two pouches each day plus a few Dreamies at bedtime.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 21/11/2024 10:14

By comparison here is one of mine who also has thick fur. Vet suggests he is sized perfectly but lots of visitors think he's skinny.

Thank you I do think the thick fur one might be a little bit overweight to be honest. I dont know how to stop them eating though if I cut back they will relentlessly meow all day and even wake me in the night for food or start plucking at things to get my attention. I do think its alot and because they don't both feed at the same time as come and go from outdoors it feels like your never away from the food bowl

Do you have scales at home? It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on their weight as an indictator of their health. Eating significantly more than usual but not putting on weight suggests a thyroid problem.

Esgaroth · 21/11/2024 11:55

I would ask your vet. It sounds like a lot and even if they don't have worms there could be some other medical issue that's making them excessively hungry?

Or they could just be naturally greedy, in which case it won't be healthy for them to be fed on demand I would think.

My cat has one 85g pouch per day split into two meals plus 40g of dry food also split into two meals - as per the feeding guidelines for his weight on the packaging. He asks for more but he's a good weight so he doesn't get it because I don't want him getting fat. I would up it if he started getting too skinny but not otherwise.

coffeesaveslives · 21/11/2024 12:22

That's an insane amount of food.

My three adult males get a pouch of wet food each a day, plus two small handfuls of dry food each. They also get the occasional bit of chicken and a few dreamies when they come in for the night.

40 pouches of food lasts them two weeks!

OrchestralRemoversInTheDark · 21/11/2024 12:27

You could try smaller bowls or only putting out half a pouch at a time. We've got one chap who makes it clear he thinks he should have a pouch every time he passes his food bowl - but he's also stupid, so falls for it if you mime putting out more dry food; he's also easily distracted so if you throw a ping pong ball he'll forget why he was there. Some times even just opening the back door gains 30 mins of peace. He's worse in the winter, the last few weeks he's been asking repeatedly for second pouch from about 9am.

brokenwand · 21/11/2024 12:34

mine was fed 3-4 pouches a day & biscuit bowl but always wanted more. have changed him to fresh & he gets 2 pouches a day & biscuit bowl and no longer asks for more

Aikko · 21/11/2024 14:12

I have a 10 year old cat that eats pretty much 4 small tins of wet food per day (Untamed good quality).

He isn’t interested in treats or dry food as he has no teeth and can’t chew hard stuff, but still meows at me for more food. He weighs in about 5kg and is pretty active.

fivebyfivebuffy · 21/11/2024 14:54

That's loads!
My boy is 6.5kg and gets 1 x 50g pouch of wet food and 60g dry

GuppytheCat · 21/11/2024 14:57

That's quite a chunky looking cat. (Not trying to be rude here; one of mine eats like it's going out of fashion.) Have you any idea of his current weight?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 21/11/2024 15:15

Is he wormed?

My cats are chonky, even for Maine Coons, but they get 1 pouch a day, split over 2 meals. and dry food each. They think they are on starvation rations, obviously, but their backsides show how untrue this is.

At 7+ pouches a day I'd have to roll them around the house, they would be giant fat balls.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 21/11/2024 15:48

Hills do some dry food called 'Appetite Control' and that worked for ours.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 21/11/2024 15:53

Ideal weight for an adult male cat is between 3.5 and 4.5 kilos. I'm guessing (due to the similarity between the pic of yours and one of my fatties) that your cat is around 5.5 - 6 kilos.

It is easy to weigh them. Weigh yourself holding the cat, and then again without. The difference is the cat's weight.

ScottBakula · 21/11/2024 16:12

That's a lot imo, my young adult ( indoor ) male gets 1 80g pouch per day , occasionally he gets another ½ if he is pestering.
He has a biscuit bowl ( go-cat indoor cats ) which I keep topped up so it's hard to say how much he eats but I'd guess at about 70/90g per day.

He is a oddball and won't eat anything other than cat food , so no sneaky chicken, cheese, dreamies etc.

iloveeverykindofcat · 21/11/2024 16:16

From that pic OP he looks overweight. You should be able to feel their ribs quite easily (not see them) - the stomach shouldn't curve out like that. My senior girl has a slighlty rounded-out belly but not that much. According to the vet, she is mildly chubby but fine for her age, as a little extra padding is ok for older cats. Everyone says my young adult is thin, but her vet says she's spot on, young cats are supposed to be slender, people are used to seeing overweight pets. I'm afraid I think you are overfeeding. The best way to cut back is to decrease portion size rather than frequency - sometimes the act of being fed is enough to satisfy them, if they're going to nag anyway you might as well.

AltitudeCheck · 21/11/2024 16:26

We mix some water in with our cats wet food meat and mash it up so our greedy cat can't bolt the whole lot in a few mouthfuls. It seems to slow them down and maybe fills them up a little bit more too. By the time that's finished they're usually ready for a sleep.

If I am wfh one will ask for food every time he hears me open the fridge, I think it's a pavlovian response rather than actually being hungry as on an office day he's still sound asleep when I get back.

Yes - I would agree - sorry OP.

One of mine was quite substantially overweight last year so no judgement , the weight can sneak up fast, but you do want to get it back off him before he starts suffering with diabetes or arthritis.

CouchSweetPotatoes · 21/11/2024 16:43

What food do you give them?

Mine is like this if I feed Felix or Whiskas. He goes absolutely crazy about food, it’s more like drugs or something! I have him on Harringtons, which probably isn’t the best quality but seems to satisfy him and keeps his dodgy tummy happy.

Mine is a very large cat, he has 2-3 pouches a day and biscuit bowl always filled.
