Worry over weeing blood

Evening everyone,

I'm just in a bit of a panic really and needed to talk it out if anyone's around.

My lovely cat is 8 and has always been well. She's been a bit off colour the past couple days and since returning home from work, she's been in and out of the litter tray like a yoyo.

I've gone to check and there are little puddles of red in her cat san. So it seems she's got blood in her wee.

I desperately want to get her seen by the out of hours vets tonight, but being that I'm alone with a three year old, and the OOH is a good 45-50 minute drive away in good weather (rather than the current pouring rain) I'm a little anxious to at this time of night!

She's eating and drinking fine, and purring away with head bops when I've sat on the floor with her. But seems keen on staying either on the sofa or under the bed to sleep. Though to be fair this has been the case since my three year old started frequenting my bed.

I guess if anyone is awake, my question is, do I need to get me and my DD up and out the house and nearly midnight or would a very apologetic call to work and a vets call first thing suffice?

I'm getting the insurance paperwork together as I type.. just incase!

Feeling very sorry for my girl, and very very worried!

I know UTIs in male cats are OOH vets immediately in case they block
Female cat... I would be tempted to wait if you know you can go first thing but then I get the worry of if it gets worse

Sorry that's probably not helpful!

justasking111 · 18/11/2024 23:58

Our female cat gets UTI occasionally. I'd wait till morning.

Orchid887 · 19/11/2024 00:06

Thank you both, I really appreciate it. I don't think I'll be getting any sleep so at least I can keep an eye on her. It's so horrible and desperately wish I had a crystal ball! Obviously I absolutely want her treated and would hate to think I was doing something (or not doing something that needed doing!) And it made her worse.

Equally, waking my daughter and driving us all that way, with a cat who gets wildly stressed in the car, doesn't feel like a great option if it can wait a few hours until the one two minutes down the road opens.

What a worry!

My boy had it on a Sunday typically, he had a wee then was in and out the tray about 30 times
I got him to the vet within an hour (male so needed seeing) and it cost me £298 just for the consult
He's now on hills urinary food and I really recommend cystease which is about £10 on Amazon, you just mix it into food

Icepinkeskimo · 19/11/2024 00:13

Shes young however blood in her urine is a concern. Are her ears hot? to the touch?

If she’s comfortable at the moment, then as long as she’s warm then definitely I would suggest waiting for the vet to open and hit that phone right on the dot of them opening.

Thinking of you and hoping your girl has a peaceful nights sleep (and you as well!).

Orchid887 · 19/11/2024 00:22

Oh gosh @buffyspikefaithangel! This is always the worry with the out of hours.
I've thankfully, touch wood, never had to use them. Though came close once.. same cat (I have three!). She'd jumped off a high bookcase to great me at 3:30am when I returned from a twilight shift. On a Sunday morning before a bank holiday of course!
She immediately put her paw up and wouldn't even limp towards me. Just kept howling.
A call to the emergency vet had me shuffling around checking my own insurance for driving with a healing knee dislocation and collecting her box etc.
Finally got through and of course they instructed me to come in immediately. Plopped the box down and she came running up to me for some love.

Called the vet back who diagnosed "she fell asleep on her leg and it felt tingling and she didn't like it".

My bank account was rejoicing, having been told my appointment alone would cost £300 and that was before xrays which were absolutely necessary.

Gosh I hope she's okay.

@Icepinkeskimo - Her ears feel a normal temperature and she's happily letting me stroke her. She's let out the odd pitiful meow but honestly that isn't so unusual for her. Especially when I've been at work all day. It's often how she let's me know she's not quite done with the company so I dare not go to bed.

Thank you, I will keep a really close eye on her and be on the phone the second they open! Thankfully my DD has a nursery drop off time of 7:30 so she'll be settled elsewhere in time for frantic vet calls!

To clarify, her ears are warm to me, normal for her!

I'd guess it's a urinary infection and she should be fine until the morning. I presume she's still eating and drinking ok?

Thank you! Yes, she's been eating and drinking fine and I came out to see her after her latest toilet trip, where she trotted up to me happily. We are now both laying on the floor, she's happily rolling around for love and I'm considering spending the night right here with her!

You sound like an amazing cat mum! Please do keep us posted! I always think things aren't toooo bad if they are eating and drinking. It's when they stop that I worry. Our 20+ boy was eating and drinking lots until the day before he died.

I slept on the floor with him for several nights before he passed. One night, he gripped my finger tightly between his claws. If I went to move my finger, he tightened his grip. So we lay there for a few hours, with him holding my finger, until I guess he finally fell asleep and let go. I will always cherish that memory.

Cats are fabulous!

Thank you. I've been so so lucky with my girls that they've never been poorly. It's such a worry! She is drinking lots which is good and it doesn't seem to have slowed her down on her food. Though she does look a bit sorry for herself this morning. We snuggled on the floor of the bathroom last night. Her under the blanket and popping out for a wee frequently.
I must have dosed off around 5am as when my alarm went off at 5:30, she was asleep in my bed with my daughter and it was just me remaining on the floor.
I've spoken to the vet who is thankfully seeing her at 9:15am. So I'm just packing her up now.

I'm so sorry to hear about your boy. They really are such wonderful parts of our family. Glad he had someone like you to snuggle with in those times.

A cat drinking lots and going to wee and blood is all classics of a UTI or the start of kidney problems another common disease cats are very prone to.

Orchid887 · 19/11/2024 09:54

Just got her back from the vets. They were so lovely and pleased to say it isn't anything sinister!

She has cystitis but no temperature etc so they believe it to be inflammatory. There's a new neighbourhood cat that's been stressing her out so I've got some feliway and I've shut the door to the room they can see it from.

They've given her an anti-inflammatory injection, some metacam to have at home and some capsules for her food.

So hopefully she'll be feeling miles better ASAP!

Work have been fabulous with my stress and have agreed I can work from home so at least I'll be home with her today!
Then I'm on annual leave for the week so plenty of chances for cuddles.

Thank you all so much again.
