Not sure what to do, 10 week old kitten and holiday

We have fell in love with a beautiful girl who is coming home this week. We wasn’t supposed to be looking for a new kitten until after Xmas but she fell into our lap and we couldn’t say no.

the problem is we are going away for a long weekend at the start of December and she will be 10 weeks old. I’m stressed and I don’t know what to do :( obviously she will be too young for a cattery but thought of her being left alone with someone only coming in a few times a day makes me feel sick.

i don’t know what to do :(

You need to cancel your holiday and prioritise your pet. Or get a live in catsitter.

Inezz · 17/11/2024 21:10

You can't leave a 10 week old kitten with only someone coming in 1-2 x per day to feed it. Poor kitten.

You need to get someone to stay in your house with it or not go away.

lunar1 · 17/11/2024 21:10

Either delay the kitten coming or cancel your trip. It would e absolutely cruel to leave her alone so young and so soon.

AwkwardPaws27 · 17/11/2024 21:10

Second the live-in petsitter - any friends or family who might stay with her?

EmpressaurusKitty · 17/11/2024 21:11

What everyone else said.

At 10 weeks a kitten can’t be left alone for more than 3 hours. You either get someone to stay in your home or you don’t go. Try Cat in a flat or Pawshake.

Yes I’m thinking of paying my niece to come and stay with her. I thought that would be the best option.

Doesn't cost you anything. I house and cat sit. Advice - don't make it all about the cat (albeit she's gorgeous!) Post some pics of your house and where it is. Be welcoming to potential sitter. If you're quick and do it right you should get someone.
Obviously I can only speak for myself but if I was sitting for you and I had that adorable little kitty to take care of I would take that responsibility extremely seriously and love her to pieces. 💓

Would her breeder/the rescue be willing to board her while you're away?

gamerchick · 17/11/2024 21:16

Delay the kitten OP.

Hoppinggreen · 17/11/2024 21:22

Either
You don't get the kitten
You don't go away
Someone stays at your house

BlueSilverCats · 17/11/2024 21:23

Where are you getting her from? The rescue we got ours from allowed us to leave him there until we were back from our holiday.

FernandJasminethekittens · 17/11/2024 21:27

She was too young to leave her breeder.

Minimum 13 weeks is the youngest they should leave - for a start she won't have bad both sets of vaccinations so will a cattery even accept her?

I'd get the breeder to keep her until after your holiday; a good one will.

Compash · 17/11/2024 21:28

I'm glad you're thinking of this - you're right, the kitten can't be alone - she's just a baby! If your niece is a gentle, trustworthy person, that would be best, because Kitty will want to get settled in her new home - territory is really important to cats.

If not, would the breeder/rescue be able to hold onto her for a little longer?

She is a little beauty, isn't she? 😍

No good breeder would put kittens up for adoption pre-vaccinations, surely - I don’t believe any decent rescue would either.

This.

No decent breeder would let kittens go at 8 weeks.

We got our kittens before they had had their second vaccines, but they had been booked in for them before they left and the rescue phoned to check that we had remembered the appointment. In that sense it worked the same as neutering. It was just made very clear that this was an essential thing for us to do (and the rescue paid for the vaccination.)

But I agree with others that the kitten needs someone to be living in the house, or if that isn’t possible to have the arrival delayed till after the holiday, when she will still be very young.

The kitten is gorgeous - I can see why you fell in love with her.

WaffleDogg20 · 18/11/2024 07:50

She will have had her first and booked for her second.

Same with our old girl she came home at 9 weeks.

its all been sorted now and my adult niece is staying for the weekend x

That’s great.

You may want to hide this thread now, because you’ll get a lot of people just responding to your OP without realising it’s sorted out.

Oreyt · 18/11/2024 09:04

Glad it's sorted. Why didn't you ask her before starting the thread though? Is your niece really staying?

WaffleDogg20 · 18/11/2024 09:56

I didn’t even think to ask her tbh, she lives far away and I put a post on Facebook the same time as this thread.

im so anxious about bringing her home and doing the right thing so I just panicked and made a post. I was debating cancelling the holiday but it’s to Germany and costing quite abit :(

This happened to me in October I wrote a thread about it. No cattery worth it will take a kitten so young. In the end I ended up paying my niece £60 a day to live in, she’s 17 so think she was happy with the money. Unless you can get someone to live in you’ll have to cancel your trip.
