DCat claws ripping litter tray liner to shreds

Hi, does anyone have any tips or recommendations for a good sturdy liner that can withstand this? Got massive holes in the liners and I'm having to constantly clean damp litter off the bottom of the tray. Thanks!

I've changed to using the wooden pellets with no liner

We have a top box tray (catis a pro at scattering litter!) and it came with a liner made of the same stuff as Ikea blue bags. In fact, when the liner was past its best we just switched to the blue bags and can testify they are pretty indestructible, and cat isn’t bothered at all by it.

More litter and no liner. We use Greenwoods litter and practically never have to change the trays as the pee and poo never makes it to the bottom.

Newspaper

Pixiedust1234 · 17/11/2024 08:27

How deep is the litter? Some cats don't mind a thin layer but others like to dig a proper hole before doing anything.

I agree with a decent clumping litter and no liner. I used to be a catsitter and saw many different methods. (Newspaper liner was the worst I came across as it would get sopping wet and be disgusting to change.)

I fill the tray (medium sized) about two-thirds with Felight non clumping litter. Think I need to change brand to clumping and go liner-less. Thanks all!

Yeah liners are useless. Like a pp, I’m a Catsitter and the best method is no liner with clumping or wood pellets. I like wood pellets myself because it’s so biodegradable. Mine goes on the compost heap (poo removed).

We use super clumping litter and cardboard trays

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/11/2024 10:19

Our previous cat toileted outside and only used the tray in absolutely dire emergencies. We used about 1/3 of a newspaper and Catsan. The same bag of litter was in the house for about five years. When she was pts and we adopted our new boy I did the same with the trays, and got a surprise to discover that he digs like a wild animal! He was born in a woman’s shed and lived in her shed/garden with her feeding until about this time last year when she finally took him and his brother in once it got super cold - maybe that’s why. Anyway the newspaper was shredded after the first wee, and now we just use deep Catsan. Annoyingly he won’t toilet outside at all.

Our last cat was the same, we could go ages before emptying his tray. DCat was 'sold' to us as an outdoor cat but tbh she's a real homebody, only goes out for short periods and seems to do all her business in the litter tray. Stinks the place out in the process too

Different cat litters have different stink levels! Experiment. I stopped using Maizy because although it’s very sustainable and biodegradable, the stink level was terrible. With wood pellets I have to properly look for poos because you wouldn’t know they were there by smell.

cherrytree12345 · 17/11/2024 10:47

I use clumping litter without a liner. I have it deep and nothing reaches the bottom of the tray. Occasionally is she does it in a corner I have to scrape it off and then clean with loo paper - but very rarely is that necessary

Yeah, you definitely need clumping litter otherwise the pee just trickles down to the bottom, lol.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/11/2024 13:28

Don't bother with the liner. It's pointless.

Pixiedust1234 · 17/11/2024 14:54

Agree with pp about trying different cat litter. I use a mix of two. One is Asda's cheap clumping litter and then I mix some Morrisons antibacterial litter in it. One clumps but smells, the other disintegrates so I can't get it out but doesn't smell. Morrisons used to do brilliant antibacterial clumping which was perfect but their recent one doesn't stay clumped when you scoop.
