Cat flaps vs wind

I thought we would end up fitting a cat flap in the back door for our new cat, but DH thinks that it would bang in the wind.

We do live in an exceptionally windy place. We often have winds of 40+ mph and the back door isn't in a recess or a porch or anything.

We have windows we can open instead, which I think he would be able to jump through easily enough, but I thought a cat flap would be easier.

Is a cat flap a non-starter for a very windy place?

Get a microchip flap, they are latched closed unless the cat is going through.

And they don't rattle at all in strong winds?

Another vote for a microchip one! Eliminates the wind issue as it’s locked and only opens for your cat, and stops any uninvited visitors!

Our microchip cat flap doesn't rattle at all in the wind.

I have a non microchip one. It doesn't rattle but it does jam partially open.

(Badly installed)

We have a microchip one too. Doesn't rattle or get stuck - works fine.
I have seen one now which can tell if the cat has something in its mouth (AI) and won't open if it has eg mouse or bird etc. More expensive obviously but I would have gone for that if I had known about it when we bought ours no little presents that way

They have a magnet so they stay shut. No wind flapping in my non microchip one here

Esgaroth · 18/11/2024 21:39

I will try to persuade him a microchip flap can withstand the wind. I do get his concerns though because a lot of products that are OK elsewhere just aren't good enough for a literal gale. I am not talking stiff breezes here 😆

We put our cat flap through the wall. It has a lockable flap on the inside, a short tunnel and another plain flap on the outside. No issues with wind. The cats enjoy sitting in the tunnel with their noses sticking out in bad weather, their fur acts as a draft excluder!
