Is fresh cat food worth the extra money?

We adopted our boy in June - we were told he he was 8 but have recently found out he is in fact 11. Since we got him he has always been quite skinny, but he seems happy and healthy otherwise. His coat is glossy, he enjoys a being stroked, he is a lovely boy.

Every day he is very keen to get his food in the morning and evening - he has Felix original - but he always leaves some. I have been reading a lot about how fresh cat food like Katkin is better for cats, they enjoy it and eat it all and it helps with weight. But it's twice the price of his normal food and I'm not sure if it's worth it. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Also, which brand would you recommend?

We tried katkin and he went off it sadly which was a shame as I wanted him to have better wet food.

He has purizon dry food so I try not to worry too much about the quality of wet food now if he won't eat it.

My neighbours cat loves katkin food

Thanks for your reply @Sunshineandrainbow. I looked into it and now all my Facebook ads are for different cat food brands 😂

It's defo worth trying some just be careful as lots are subscription so remember to cancel.

Does he eat dry food if so which brand?

BarbaraVineFan · 16/11/2024 13:59

He has go cat, but he doesn't really eat much dry food - only as a last resort!

I would try a better dry food I don't think there is much nutritional value in go cat. We get purizon from zooplus cat adores it. But high street has better ones too such as lilly kitchen or James well beloved.

I tried the untamed trial pack with my cat, and he didn't care for it, preferring his usual Sheba.

However he does love his Carnilove dried food.

I asked my vet and she was quite dismissive of it and said off the shelf food is fine.

We got the trial for Untamed and she loved it. We subscribed for a month and she immediately went off it and will only eat Felix. It's cheaper and she seems fine on it.

I really wouldn't feed GoCat - it's 90% fillers and really not good for them.

My vet's advice is to feed the best quality dry food you can afford and whatever wet they'll eat as it's more important that they get the moisture from it than anything else.

I have an Unearthed subscription and my cat absolutely loves it. She never used to eat the pouches of wet food from the supermarket (Whiskas etc) and I could see why as they smell absolutely rank! The Unearthed stuff comes out of the tin looking like whatever it actually is (chicken, tuna, etc) and she licks the bowl clean. I only give her one tin a day and the rest of her food is her dry stuff.

Elektra1 · 18/11/2024 11:07

Sorry - Untamed not Unearthed!

We have an elderly skinny cat too - again, a bit of a guess as to his age but the vet reckons about 15.

We got blood tests etc done as I was worried about him, but he's absolutely fine. We were recommended to put him on a dried food for kittens (he's on Applaws) and small tins of mousse/paté type of food, so he doesn't just eat the jelly/gravy. We use Purina Gold paté and he has a tin of that in the morning and the evening. He's still skinny but his weight is stable now.
