I do after the last 2 days I'm in night 3 of 6 nights of nightshifts this week. Said cat yesterday and today when I'd just managed to fall asleep has been barging bedroom door open and being very vocal. He's never done this before had him 8 years . He needed nothing fed him before going to bed. Has a cat flap and never ventures up the stairs. I'm exhausted had 3 hours sleep in 48 hours!

stormsandsunshine · 11/11/2024 16:10

No I adore ours, but cats can be an unknown quantity and I think (so far touch wood) we have lucked out, as they are friendly without being needy, playful but also gentle and not bitey, and are not destructive.

If they weren’t I would still love them but I would feel guilty as I talked DH into the cats and he would regret agreeing if they were a constant nuisance.

Sayoonara · 11/11/2024 16:43

I love my cat a lot but I really miss just being able to go away on holiday without working out a cat sitter. She is a very clingy, nervous, rescue and I wouldn't put her in a cattery. For a few days away it's fine, I get someone to pop in. For more than 5 days it becomes a huge hassle of finding a live-in cat sitter.

She's perfect though. Politely waits until I am awake for cuddles, eats almost anything, uses her tray nicely, loves a lap sit.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 11/11/2024 17:45

I can honestly say I've never regretted getting any of my cats (10 to date of which four are still with us). All individual characters and all have enriched my life.
Wouldn't have been without any of them.

Our cat is also very bitey and will also sit on our laps but will then suddenly have a look in her eye which will turn into a full blown bite (which hurts). No idea why. Have tried ignoring her, playing with her, distracting her, a loud OUCH. Nothing works. She is very very confident and not much scares her so I think it might just be her personality. We don't know much about her last home, just that she was shut in one room for the first year of her life (maybe because of the biting) but she has all the freedom she wants now with her microchip cat flap and the run of the house.

I had this exact thing with my cat. He was really docile and loving then get a look in his eye and I was actually scared of him. I couldn’t walk up the stairs without him hanging off my ankles. I realised he was trying to play so would try to distract him when I saw the look by using a feather toy. I decided to take a risk and we got a kitten and it’s been a game changer. He hasn’t attacked me once since. He’s so much more chilled and happy. I don’t know if it’ll work for you, but it’s been incredible.

No - my cat is an absolute darling, very affectionate and saved my mental health during lockdown. I love her to bits. Apart from when she jumps on my bed at 5 a.m.

Dontsayyouloveme · 11/11/2024 20:54

Noooooo, not possible…

I did for a little while. i took two years after my lovely old girl died and then I got two 5 year old ex-breeding queens. They were so nervous for so long that I did regret it but now I've had them for over a year and they are the most affectionate dunderheads and I love them.
I have paid my cat tax.

Happyinarcon · 11/11/2024 14:12

Yes I do. I had an old cat that died who was an absolute gem so i thought id get a kitten because a cat’s a cat right??
This now adult cat is noisy at night meowing and banging on doors to wake us up. She is very fussy about the litter tray so if you miss a scoop she will go and pee somewhere else around the house and I struggle to get the smell out of things. She has damaged doors by scratching on them and last night went into the pantry and chewed a packet of liquid stock, which seeped into the shelf and damaged the veneer.
On top of this she doesn’t really like to be petted and will randomly bite or scratch you. She will come and sit on you occasionally but it’s kind of threatening to be honest.
I can’t rehome her because no one wants an unfriendly, destructive, noisy nocturnal cat, and I’m not going to abandon her because I believe she is 100% my responsibility as her owner, but I do wish there wasn’t another 15 years of this. Having said all that, I think she’s a happy cat who likes us a family so maybe we just need a cat family therapist.

This made me chuckle 🤭

JaceLancs · 11/11/2024 22:09

Not at all - I am besotted! I’ve had a cat or cats in my life for past 40 years and the last 2 grey boys have been the best ever!

CatsandDogs22 · 11/11/2024 22:19

Yes 1 of them. She’d prefer to be an only cat. We have 3, and 2 dogs she’s never accepted.

Unfortunately she’s also quite unhinged - we think birth trauma, she doesn’t learn anything quickly (took her 6 months to learn to ask for food), only has fight no flight response and her mood turns on a dime. She’s also very specific about who she likes and doesn’t cope at all with change - we move furniture around and it takes her a month to adapt.

So we keep her. We think if we rehome her she wouldn’t cope, she’d end up being abandoned or put down or worse.

Luckily she does love us, and when in a good mood is very very sweet, and we do try to minimise the stress between her and the other animals.

crazyunicornlady73 · 11/11/2024 22:24

Sometimes, they're not particularly clean cats so they kick their cat litter everywhere, pee on the carpet in the front hall and mark each litter tray so that the house constantly whiffs of cat wee.
They also scratch and ruin everything nice it seems.

On the other hand they're very sweet, friendly and funny and we love them to bits so no.

buffyspikefaith · 11/11/2024 22:25

Never! He's the light of my life Smile

Not once, he is an important member of the family 😻

ItsLovelyWeatherForDucks · 11/11/2024 22:36

We have had cats for 25-ish years since our DC were toddlers/infants, and have had 4 over those years. We have loved having them, and they have brought much love and joy to our life. We always popped them into a cat hotel when we went on holiday. And they weren't such a tie because you can leave them with some food and the cat flap - and be out all day. Even stop overnight occasionally.

However, we have one cat left - aged 17 - and whilst we do love her and care for her and make a fuss over her, we will never have another cat. Because even though they're less of a tie than dogs, they are still a tie. She is so timid and clingy now that she is elderly - that we can't put her in a cat hotel now. (Been like this 2 years.) She would be so shocked and traumatised by it.

She is 80% to 90% deaf too - so she would so so frightened and disorientated. Me and DH want to go away on a cruise for our 35th wedding anniversary next year, as we missed doing anything for our 30th because of covid. But we can't go because of the cat. (Unless we let someone in our house - a cat sitter.) And DH is (at the moment) refusing to let that happen.

I don't know whether it's an old age thing (well, older...) but I am never having any more cats. I CBA. DH agrees ... My 2 DC seems shocked by this, and the oldest one seems borderline offended LOL. 'Like why would you not want to give a cat a home mum?' she says... 'Errr, because we have given 4 cats homes over the last quarter century. We've done our bit ta'.

Also, as much as we love our cat, she has days when she is frustrating. She can be whiny and moany, and she mithers me and DH to death! And she often begs for food, and then leaves it. Then she whines for food again, then leaves that! And so on... Til we have 6 different types of food out! And she is getting health issues and costing £££££ in vet fees! She also scratches furniture and pulls at the carpets! (She has a scratching post but rarely uses it.)

She is never lonely as we are in a lot (as I work from home.) But she rarely goes out and gets bored easily so she plays up. As I said, this has only been for past 2 years.

I am much more impatient and intolerant these days - at 60-ish, and lose patience with her easily. It's not fair on any (new) cat to have me as an owner, because I seriously CBA anymore. And whilst I love my cat, and care for her, and fuss her, and play with her, I'm not gonna lie... I can't wait to be free of pets! I have enjoyed having cats for many years - but for the past 2 years not so much. She is lovely company when she is chilled, but about a third of the time she is like a naughty, boisterous, attention-seeking toddler. 😬

Upshot! I do not regret my cats - any of them! But I will have no more!

ProvincialLady24 · 11/11/2024 22:42

My cat is the sweetest and most affectionate little thing. She absolutely adores me. I wouldn't swap her for anything. She comes to bed with me and gets up with me. Wherever I am, she wants to be.

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 11/11/2024 23:16

Never. He was the most loving and affectionate Cat ever who loved nothing more than climbing up on me and wrapping himself around my neck like a scarf. I miss him every day

Awwww my little Luna is the same! I call her my shadow cos she always follows me everywhere 🥰🥰🥰

No33 · 12/11/2024 07:58

Nope. I adore them both to the ends of the earth. They are ensconced in our family and I can't imagine life without them. I get teary thinking about the future because they mean so much.

My boy is so loving, he wants to be where I am, drives me crazy at times, but wouldn't be without him. My girl is typical aloof cat, so when she gives you cuddles it's so special and meaningful.

Oreyt · 12/11/2024 08:03

Cat 1 - Female age 5. Never regretted.

Cat 2 - Male age 1. Life was easier and less stressful for us and cat 1.

Rainbow321 · 12/11/2024 08:06

Our cat is 11 now , had her from a young kitten . She is not a lap cat but will very , very occasionally come sit on you , she will however lie next to you and likes to be petted on her terms only .
As a younger cat, she was very bitey but that has calmed down .
We all love her to bits , but I won't ever get another .

Ididntsaybanana · 12/11/2024 08:18

There was a week when she was 6 months old, when we first got her, that I wondered if we'd made the right decision. She is just a lovely wee cat and we're all so glad she is here, even if i'm a bit miffed that her favourite person is my not all that fussed about cats husband!

caringcarer · 12/11/2024 10:00

No I've never been sorry I got my 2 cats. I've had them from kittens. They are both very affectionate. I went on holiday a couple of weeks ago and my DS moved back in to look after my cats and dogs. When I got back my big half Maine Coone fluffy boy cat would not come up to see me. My little girl cat came straight up cuddling on my lap and purring but he just sat and glared at me. He wouldn't even come for a cat treat meaty stick which he loves. The next day he sidled over sat in my lap and wouldn't get off even when I had to get up he followed me about all day and every time I sat down and he jumped up on me. He seems back to normal now. Clearly he punished me for daring to go on holiday without him. I love them both so much.

noodlercanoodler · 12/11/2024 10:03

I have 2 cats who will have a safe home and cuddles for the rest of their lives

However yes, there will never be another cat in my house

I'm not a cat person. My black and white one adores me though and to be fair, he's lovely but the hair. The fucking hair

The other wee one, she's pleasant enough but she's DH's cat

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 12/11/2024 10:05

I love my pair, but I really wish one of them hadn't absolutely destroyed two sofas. I really need new ones (sofas, not cats) but I despair at the thought of forking out £££ and with 6 months they're shredded. We've tried everything. Same cat shreds bed linen as well, but it's easy enough to hide that with a blanket.
