How am I supposed to wash my cats tail?!

Woke up this morning to poo everywhere. My cat is long haired and he has it all stuck in his very bushy tail. I put him straight outside while I cleaned the poo from the house, but when he comes back in I have no idea how I’m going to wash him! He’s a very big cat and not fond of touching or being picked up etc so will fight me if I try. It’s a two man job but my boyfriend is at work until about 7pm tonight. Any tips? 😫

In the bath tub with the shower , comb out the tangled bits afterwards.I used to have a persian, I don't remeber really bathing her but I had to hold her down and comb her often she would hiss, a lot.Do you have a second person to help you?

theres 0% chance of me being able to do this. I don’t have anyone to help me. I could try it if someone was here but by myself there’s no way

I'd search for a local pet groomer, they have special harnesses they put them in when washing.

Ollybob · 08/11/2024 08:48

I'd try a wet flannel, just wipe as he goes past, hopefully kitty will sort most of it himself.
If it's really bad wrapping him in a towel, all sharp bits tucked away should hold him enough to get the job done.
In the future though a regular trim of his fluffy backside will stop this happening, I trim my cats back end and bottom of tail so less chance of getting mucky as a bath stresses him out.

i do trim around his bum because when we first got him we had that problem a lot. We switched to a gastrointestinal food as well so that his poo wasnt runny and that seemed to sort the issue out. However yesterday I gave him some treats so I think that’s what’s done it, and it’s not around his bum it’s at the end of his tail. Like he’s dipped the end of his tail in diarrhea 😣

Ew

But aside from that, I used pet wipes when my cat was unable to clean himself

Muffit · 08/11/2024 09:06

You say you have knowbody to help you, not even a friend or.neighbour.( I have a neighbour/friend who.help my dogs.).I needed someone the other day to help with eye cream formy dog's conjuntivitus. No other neighbours with a cat.( cat lovers might help you?)Just be brave and ask cheaper than a grooming salon.

Sorry for the very badly written post, but you get.my drift?

Toddlerteaplease · 08/11/2024 09:08

I used baby water wipes.

coffeesaveslives · 08/11/2024 09:10

Wet wipes or a flannel with baby shampoo is what we've used on ours.

crackofdoom · 08/11/2024 09:13

Just the end of the tail?

You could try burrito- ing him firmly in a towel with just his tail sticking out (if you let a paw escape all is lost though IME), but if I were you I'd shut him outside until the extra pair of hands comes home.

The last time my floof got poo all over her back end she was a kitten, and even at that size it was like wrestling a small bear with razor sharp claws.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/11/2024 09:15

It's not really a problem of what to clean the tail with so much as how to actually do it to a resistant large cat, isn't it?

Protective clothes, and maybe sit on a stool with cat clamped between your calves arse end out?

InTheRainOnATrain · 08/11/2024 09:18

Scruff him with one hand, baby wipe with the other

BlastedPimples · 08/11/2024 09:26

Roll him up in towel. Tail hanging out.

Hold him against your body with your arm like you do a shoulder bag. Head facing behind.

Then get to a sink. Rinse his tail. Tiny bit of shampoo so it doesn't take ages to wash out.

thanks everyone, my plan was to leave him outside until I could get someone to help me but I heard him crying at the door so tried to tackle it myself. I brushed some of it out (disgusting I know, but he doesn’t mind his tail being brushed so thought it was my safest option) and then while he was eating I cut some of it off the end of his tail. With what was left I got a baby wipe but haven’t managed to get it all out because he’s petrified of the baby wipe and is army crawling around the kitchen trying to get away from me and hissing at me

Sorry but that image did make me laugh
I think you will have to accept that hes not going to like you much for a bit but you DO need to clean his tail.
Wrap in towel, hold over sink full of warm water with safe soap in and dunk tail then wipe with kitchen roll or similar

SettlerOfDivan · 08/11/2024 10:36

I'd wrap the cat in a towel and clamp face first between my legs then use nilaqua cat shampoo. I've managed to shower "runny trousers" before with one hand pinning the cat and one hand on the shower head but it's not easy.

He is currently hiding and I can’t get to him but once he comes out I will grab him. I have tried to wrap him in a towel before but as soon as he saw the towel he legged it. He is a very nervous cat and constantly on the lookout for danger so he sees me coming a mile away. I’m boiling some chicken for him atm so while he’s eating that I will swoop in with the towel. Fingers crossed

Omg
i was reading this and scrolling and accidentally hit thanks

I'm not thanking a cat for pooping 😳😳😳😳

Anisty · 08/11/2024 11:01

I think you might find your cat does an excellent job of cleaning this herself. I'd leave her, confined in one room with something comfy to settle on for a few hours.

What she doesn't manage will dry and fall out over the next few days.

DoraChance · 08/11/2024 11:03

We've had the poo paintbrush a few times with our long haired boy. I usually find if I wipe it with wet kitchen roll it encourages him to finish off cleaning it himself.

coffeesaveslives · 08/11/2024 11:10

If he's getting really stressed to the point that he's hissing at you and hiding away, I would be inclined to just leave it.

It'll dry out and be groomed out soon enough and the last thing you want is either of you ending up hurt.

yes I think you’re right. I’ve made him some yummy chicken which is his favourite thing in the world. Usually as soon as he smells it or hears me chopping it up he is at my feet but he’s still hiding. I got most of it out anyway so hopefully he will get the rest himself
