Leaving cat for 48 hours - too long?

I posted a thread a few weeks ago about dH bringing a cat into the home and not telling anyone, long story, lots of replies and useful input. To cut that long story short, the cat (Max) is well looked after by us, not so much dH who still flits off doing his own thing whenever he likes. He's had his second set of injections this morning, and presumably will want a snuggly sleepy day. But at the weekend we are all away for a couple of days at a caravan place and will be out of the house Friday 5pm til Sunday 5pm. I thought that dH would have organised something like a cattery or at least someone to come in the house, but having just asked him, he says his plan is to 'leave three meals out for Saturday and we'll be back on Sunday so all is fine'. Is it? Before I go searching out catteries and taking over responsibility again, do I leave him to it?

This is fine for an outdoor, confident, well settled cat. You can leave a timed feeder, or even enough biscuits for two days and plenty of water. For some cats. Others will eat too much. Wet food, I would not leave.
If he has not been long with you, which sems the case, then is better if someone pops in and checks on him. Is he a kitten or playfull? If he is, better to stay around for a while trying to engage.
Litter, you can leave more than one container, ideally 3. For two days, I think that should be enough. There are self cleaning litter boxes too.
Cats are very independant. He will only really miss you if there is no food, water or litter. Otherwise, they entertain themselves, sleep long hours and take over their kingdom.

Too long. Definitely.

Does cat use litter tray? That should get cleaned at least 3 times a day. So that would be 6 cleans potentially missing.

I'd arrange a neighbour to visit my cats if we were gone for a long day! Say 08:00 - 22:00 never mind 48 hours.

I also put a cat-cam out to check on them. 😳

Cat litter tray cleaned three times a day🤣🤣

Yeah... no.

@WinkyTinky

Plenty of people would leave a cat 48 hours, but I'd worry too much about them. Hopefully you have a nice day, but that'll all pop in for a bit of a feed at Water check and a fuss.

I don’t have a litter tray and mine go outside but I still wouldn’t leave them 48 hours. 24 hours ish. I could leave out loads of dry food as they don’t tend to eat it all at once.

Do they eat use their own separate litter tray? Or do they share?

TheDefiant · 11/04/2025 21:17

I check morning, middle of the day and before I go to bed. If used it gets cleaned. If I spot cat using the tray I clean immediately. So yes, three times a day.

It sounds like your cat is still a kitten if only just had injections. That's far too long for a little kitten to be alone. It will be so scared. Get a teen/student to come in for 15 minutes to cuddle it, feed it and play with it. You can leave an extra litter tray but the kitten needs company. If it was a much older cat it might be ok with a timed feeder. Leaving food put more than overnight it does horrible and cats won't eat it.
