Insurance for cat of 10+ years

How much are you paying for pet insurance for your outdoor, no-morbidity cat? Petplan have just put mine up to £450 from £350 and I’m now thinking of moving. He was already over 10 years old last renewal so I don’t think this is related to that.

Is that per year? It's not too bad if it's annually. Pet plan is always more expensive, but they're more likely to pay out.

I'm with animal friends, and when they tried to raise my premium, I got it back down to last year's price. They are also really good at paying out, in my experience.

I'm currently paying £40 a month for a 14 year old cat who has suddenly developed a lot of health problems, I don't know if he will be uninsurable next year. He only has £2000 cover though.

We were paying £100 a month for our slightly older cat and we had never claimed, but no one else would take him on. So then we stopped and he immediately got diabetes. So now he costs loads anyway.

I'm with Petplan too and my cat's insurance is now about £48 per month - she is 14. Also the amount you can claim is restricted - I think this happens when they are 10. So you lose your excess of course, and then you also have to pay 20% of what's left after that. I think they sent an email warning us that their prices would hike up this year and there was a video, but oddly I can't find either of these now.

Yes, per year. Sounds like it’s about right then. I went on comparethemarket and they had some for about £300 but they may not pay out if push came to shove.

Yes, I ended up with one who never pay out, so I had to cancel. I've put savings aside which I add to every month and no heroic treatment in the event of severe illness. I can cover bog standard stuff and dental expenses.

From experience, Petplan are worth sticking with! Had my fingers burnt with a dodgy insurance who didn't pay up. Petplan always have done.
Another thing, have you got lifetime cover/cover for life? That is very worthwhile for an older cat in case they develop any ongoing health issues.

hilariousnamehere · 04/11/2024 22:00

I'm with petplan, covered for life, just gone up to nearly £900 a year for my two littermate rescue cats who turned 11 in June so that sounds about right for one of a similar age. It's a lot monthly but I don't have savings to cover any issues they might have, and they've always been good at paying for the stuff I've claimed. Now they're older I guess I'll have to work out the excess and percentage to see what is worth claiming but if there's something big or lifelong that's an important reassurance to have.

Mine are with Petplan, yes they are pricy but they pay out, I worked for years in vets and so many of the cheaper ones don't. Last year one of mine had to be referred and it was thousands but the claim was simple, a lot of vets will only do direct claims if it's with Petplan

houseselling101 · 04/11/2024 22:24

Animal friends and I pay £15 per month and they are all age 11+

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 04/11/2024 22:47

There's no point going with anyone else now either an older cat as new insurance won't cover pre-existing conditions.

I cancelled my cats insurance once she was over 10 as I know there's a limit on what I'd spend on her....
