Need LOTS of advice - recently adopted 3 kittens

KittyQMeow · 03/11/2024 09:32

We have unexpectedly become cat parents to three kittens who lost their mother. They were meant to be temporary fosters after a neighbour's appeal, but as is often the way, we (two adults, two young kids) have fallen desperately in love with them all and have decided to adopt them.

I haven't owned any pets since my childhood, and am now struggling to make sense of what we need to have in place. Here's what we have so far:

  • All three neutered and microchipped by the charity that rescued them.
  • We are doing two wet meals a day (AVA kitten food) and two dry meals a day (Purina One kitten)
  • they are indoor only for now, but will be allowed to free roam from the spring, when they will be about 9 months old.

I just desperately need advice on the following:

  • how do you find decent pet insurance that isn't very expensive but still has good coverage? What should I look for as reasonable cover, excess and treatments for kittens? What do you all pay on average per month?
  • how often do you use flea/worm treatments on your kitties, and what's the best way to source this? Do we need to go through a vet or are over the counter good enough?
  • how do you know a vet is decent? What kinds of charges do we look out for? I don't even know how vet practices are structured, other than a friend saying they are ALL so different, so how do I as a newbie know what is the right one to go with?
  • how often do you take your cats to the vet? Do you do annual checks? Or is that just overkill for the average family pet? What's the kind of healthcare schedule your cats are on?
  • do you brush your cat's teeth??? We never did that for our childhood cat, but now I hear that's an expectation??!

My questions are endless really, from how to feed them when we are away for the day etc etc. But would appreciate any/all gentle advice on the vet/insurance/healthcare portion so we aren't feeling so out of our depth.

We have joined a pet health club via our vet where we pay money monthly so get all treatments / vaccinations 'free'. They will remind you when things are needed too.

I wouldn't buy flea treatment from anywhere but a vet.

Not all cats kill animals.

Yes sorry OP it's actually not good form to post questions about actual kittens without a photo of said kittens!
I think on your questions, sounds like you're doing a grand job. Make sure they have plenty of toys and scratchers and encourage use of these.
Kittens generally need little and often food wise and have a think about long term what you want to do food wise. I have a snacky cat so I just use dry kibbles and leave it out. My pal has v food motivated cat so she has a set feeding time instead and uses a mix of dry and wet. If you think you'll leave them alone during the day then dry kibbles are usually better for leaving out.

I would encourage recognition of names with treats as I find it very handy to call my cats in at night and they recognise their names and will come when I call (and get a treat). Rustling of packets can also work. Either way recommend something to get them to come back to you.
Vets .. we have changed vets over the years to a cheaper one. My cats are both rescues and pretty old so I won't be keeping them alive for £000s of expensive treatment when the time comes. My previous cat I did that and it was painful for all of us and I don't think it made his quality of life better in the end. Again each to their own, just shop around. Your finances will dictate excesses etc but kittens can be unexpectedly expensive as they can get into scrapes and do silly stuff so insurance is a good idea!
Enjoy your kitties

Mine can't even catch the toy mouse I have half the time let alone anything else !

EmpressaurusDelleGatte · 03/11/2024 09:54

Be very, very careful with collars - they lead to a LOT of cat injuries, even the ones marked as quick release.

I’d start by asking the rescue which vet they use, if it’s one you can get to fairly easily.

KittyQMeow · 03/11/2024 10:00

Oh dear! Ha, sorry about not paying the cat tax. Here they are. They are all black (with a tiny bit of white on one tummy). Our little ninjas. The rescue said black cats hardly ever get adopted, so we decided to get them all.

I love black cats ❤️❤️

KittyQMeow · 03/11/2024 10:04

They are very difficult to photograph though! They vanish into laps. On the plus side, our black trousers don't show up any fur.

We have also accidentally ended up with three black cats. It's the best! 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛

Thank you for this. So you got this alongside registration with your local vet? Do you have insurance on top of this?

I fear... If I leave dry food out, they will eat themselves sick 😞. We did that when we first got them, and they got upset tummies from overeating. We were told to weigh food to get them eating the right amount. Will try this again when they are older maybe and not so greedy.

OP posts:
kirinm · 03/11/2024 10:11

@KittyQMeow yes we also have pet insurance with petplan. I assume lots of vets offer this type of health club and personally for us it's worth it as we just aren't that great at remembering to order things without someone reminding us.

Yes multiple cats are harder if you have one greedy and one snacky as an example. A friend of mine has those feeders that are chipped only open for the specific cat!
Definitely weigh food is a good idea

FionaJT · 03/11/2024 10:15

Re leaving food out, my black rescue cat is 8 now and I've never been able to do so (he has a labrador's attitude to food!) I weigh meals and use a timed feeder if I'm out all day to give him lunch.

KittyQMeow · 03/11/2024 10:17

@kirinm good point! I'll check our local vets for this. For insurance, Petplan seemed dearer than Waggle. Wasn't sure if kittens need more care because of accidents, or whether good insurance is more relevant for older cats who may have health needs.

OP posts:
dcbgr · 03/11/2024 10:18

How do you tell them apart? Yes for rescues, ration food. Neuter of course and vaccinate and if outside treat for fleas and worms. Consider having them as indoors/catio. Cats who roam freely have more injuries, illnesses, and die younger (and yes kill more birds and get run over and stolen by cat-napping neighbours). But if they get used to going out, trying to keep them indoors will distress them. If they are never out, they won't miss it. What lovely kitties. I hope they behaved at halloween - three black cats are definitely in need of a witch.

littlbrowndog · 03/11/2024 10:19

I have Tesco insurance as they cover teeth. Usually about 17 pounds a month

might be cheaper for kittens and can use club card and also get discounts for multiple cats

they have been good when needed to use

littlbrowndog · 03/11/2024 10:20

Your kittens are gorgeous ♥️♥️♥️

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/11/2024 10:24

Im just here for the pics 😊
we never clean our cats teeth!
we don’t have insurance, actually our cats have never been to the vet since spaying. I get flea and worm treatment from boots and it’s fine.

KittyQMeow · 03/11/2024 10:26

@dcbgr amazingly, we can, from size and temperament. One is very talkative so that's easiest! The smallest one has a white spot on belly. And the third is heavy and purry - loves being with people (especially children).

We will revisit their going out in the spring. They are definitely indoor only at the moment.

Oh good, we have a clubcard! Will investigate prices, thanks.

tesco put the price up every year in a letter to me

I just go to Tesco online and get it from there
this year was going to be £30 a month

went online to get it. Same cover &17.00 from Tesco online

its a silly game insurers play 🤦‍♀️

Mumdiva99 · 03/11/2024 10:39

We have 2 cats. Got the insurance as we thought kittens with no sense should be insured. We started with a good one but the premiums went too high. I am now with Tesco (not saying its not good, but slightly less cover). Be mindful if you swap insurance they will not cover previous conditions.
One of our cats got stained teeth very young so that isn't covered (there is no way she is letting anyone brush her teeth)
We have kept an eye on it and it has got no worse after year 1. They do have teeth dry food mixed with other dry food.

We didn't do pet club at vets. I flea/worm a couple of times a year. It's expensive from the vet but lasts. (I think if I do it all the time the fleas will get.more resistant. I also don't like the thought of all the chemicals in the cats)

Our cats (touch wood) go to the vets once a year for their jab and a quick health check and weighing.

Enjoy your kittens they look gorgeous.
