Yet, another moan about rehoming from rescue charity

Responded to an ‘urgent’ and long list of cats requiring a new home - all ages, pairs and singles. Surely one would suit my home but no. I work 4 days a week - out of the house 8:30 to 5:00. This precludes me from being a suitable home - even for a pair of 14 year olds.

I’m really reluctant to go private but also have a calm setting for an older cat. It’s such a shame.

Moan over.

I am also shocked that animals are imported from other countries to rehome when rescues are marketing themselves as over capacity.

At my local rescue there are no home visits but they choose the cat for you rather than you choose the cat you like. I got my first wonderful cat from there before they started this ridiculous policy.

Because of this I reluctantly bought pedigree kittens from a registered breeder instead of having a rescue.

A rescue I briefly looked into is a bit like that. Their line is that people who want to choose are being superficial because they must only care about the colour of a cat’s coat or its sex. You don’t get to meet the cat until they have decided which cat you are getting and if it is in foster care you don’t get to meet it full stop.

It completely put me off adopting from them because while I was open to any colour or sex of cat, I wanted to meet an animal which might be a 20 year commitment and see if it all felt right when I started engaging with it, and I don’t think that is me being shallow or unreasonable. Even little kittens have their own personalities and not all animals click with all people.

Yes can be strange. A number of years ago got a cat from local CP. was for my 8yo DS.

did a home check and they were fine with it. They found us a VERY NERVOUS young cat. So nervous she’ll only go out in the dark in the back garden when other cats are in.

CP did a follow up and I mentioned that cat wants to be out at night sometimes - they went ballistic.

Well she’s our cat and she’s still fine 9 years on. …….

It's annoying as I often recommend adopting not shopping for a cat to people but several of them will come back and said they weren't 'allowed'. It's impossible to reconcile the fact rescues are completely overrun and the excessive adoption rules imposed. People just go and buy cats privately which encourages the buying and selling of animals.

We adopted from Romney House (Bromley) and we just sent a text with what kind of cat we were looking for (child friendly etc) and they suggested two that we went to visit. The first one chose us and we fell in love with him. All we had to do was send a video of our home to make sure it's not unsafe and that was that. I don't recall any invasive / OTT questions

Very much this!

When DSis went to get her latest ones, the pair the owner of the rescue had initially thought would be a perfect match (they were on paper) took one look at DSis & nephew no. 4 and hissed at them. Annie was happy to consider them initially but the cats themselves were adamant that they wanted no part of them.

Whereas a cat who hadn't really been on the "probable" list and Nephew No. 4 took one look & decided that would do each other fine. Then the cat in the next pen, who's kittens had played with the first one's, asked politely if she could come too.

Colour/sex hadn't really had anything to do with her choices. She's had male and female in the past, and various colours. Only thing she had in the back of her mind was maybe not black & white as her last 2 had been that. But those of you who have seen the pics of Izzy and Thrifty will know that's exactly what they ended up with!

I am also shocked that animals are imported from other countries to rehome when rescues are marketing themselves as over capacity.

This thread shows why though. People who can offer very good homes are being turned down for ridiculous reasons by rescues.

@TheOGCCL of course people will buy when rescues are so over the top with their requirements. Battersea told me they were full to capacity and had a long waiting list but apparently non of those cats were suitable for me.

Julianne65 · 29/10/2024 11:33

Our local CP was fine. Not even a home visit. They looked at our house on Google maps and said we couldn't have kittens but they were happy to let us adopt a 2 year old nutter. We already had a cat flap installed and we had to agree to let the cat do whatever she wants in the house lol (which she does). So we had to say we allowed her to sleep on sofas, beds, etc...

We went to Battersea and they only had a few cats they would show to us. The ones we were interested in they didn't let us see. They really pushed the older cats on to us which would be fine but they all had health issues. Celia Hammond were the same. Only saw older very nervous cats. The three cats that wanted our attention and who we were interested in were not available.

This is also bizarre. A cat can have a good life without being allowed to sleep on your bed! Are they saying the cat is better off staying in a cattery cage than having a comfortable home with some boundaries?

HeChokedOnAChorizo · 29/10/2024 14:38

i applied for cats from RSPCA and other cat charities, older child, not on a main road, WFH 2 days a week. Never heard back from them.

In the end i went on gumtree and got a kitten, full of fleas and worms. She is 10 weeks old now and all sorted with the fleas and worms, and we adore her.

In my eyes i did rescue her, she was not looked after, infact they said she was a boy cat (vet checked, defiantly a girl) no injections and full of fleas and worms and was tiny. The woman selling her didnt ask me one question, just picked her up and gave her to me and asked for the money, so i kind of feel she was rescued by me.

I would loved to have gone to a chartiy but i obviously wasnt suitable.

VictorianScreenTime · 29/10/2024 14:43

I think this is applicable to cats also😁

I got my pair as a retired breeding pair from a breeder.

RamblinRosie · 29/10/2024 23:05

If you’re near Reading, TVAW are good, no unreasonable demands, I’ve rescued 3 cats from them. In the past I’ve found CPL a bit picky and patronising.
