Wood pellet litter for urine sample?

DCat needs to provide a urine sample for the vet.

I just got the Katkor non-clumping litter which they recommended. It turns out, it's stoo small so the whole thing has fallen through the holes of the top tray into the bottom tray (where wee collects).

I can't put the Katkor in the bottom tray as it would be too sunken into the box, and it moves if I don't put the top tray on top. Plus DCat no longer uses her tray so chances are she won't use it if it feels very different. She's locked in for the day to force her to go there (no idea if this will work).

Does anybody know if you can use her usual (old) wood pellets instead, or would that contaminate the sample? They are quite hard and only soften if soaking.

The other thing I could try is to put some kichen paper over the holes so the wee soaks through the paper, but will this work? And would that constitue contamination?

Thank you @ScottBakula

That's the one I bought, but the granules are so small it falls through the holes.

I have put kitchen towel down, but as you say, I worry the kitchen towel may give false results. But then, it's not as fi the actual tray is sterile...

I may have to put the litter directly in the bottom tray, even if it wobbles. But it may all be academic, as the poor cat is having none of it and is desperate to go out (she hasn't used a tray for 2 years now).

I was really hoping not to have to take her back to the vet for a blood sample. She really panics.

Well, what do you know. She's just done it!

I removed the cover and the top tray with the slots, and put the litter on the bottom tray (no kitchen roll). Which means she had to sit on top on her own wee (large tray, litter pack way too small) and made a wee trail along the hall when she got out 🙁. We were both unimpressed!
But at least she'd done it now. Off to take it the vet's.

Ah yes if I'd read your post properly I would of seen you'd tried that one , sorry.

That good news , ( if a bit messy ) at least you can get it tested.

What is wrong with her ( symptoms wise )

She's drinking a lot more than usual, and crucially next to her food, where I had only seen her drink from once or twice in 4 years.

She also seems to have put some weight on, but her food intake has not changed (unless she's eating out, maybe hedgehog feed that people put out?)
She was weighed at the vet's a couple of days ago, she's put on just a bit really, but her belly protudes on the sides.

She's generally well, bright, happy, good apetite and active/sleepy at the usual times.

Vet says it could be diabetes or kidney issues.

Aww poor stickykitty.
I hope its something that is easy to treat and she gets better soon.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 25/10/2024 18:02

I hope she's ok.

We had to use Katkor for Harry and I ended up buying 4 or 5 bags as I knew his lordship would not entertain the idea of weeing in a tray with insufficient litter!

Thank you @ScottBakula and @PinkSparklyPussyCat .

I do hope it's neither of those things. I feel like a terrible owner, but we have always been very careful with meals, not to many treats, etc.

She does eat Felix in gravy though as her wet food, which even I can tell on sight that it cannot be good for any cat. DH bought it once to try because it looked 'appetising' (as if cats cared!) and she became addicted.

I have tried to wean her off with all the premium foods like Untamed, etc. She will not enteratain them! But I am going to get tough now because I have long been worried about the wet food (now reduced to one sachet per day).

She has James Wellbeloved dry biscuits, and the vet recommended Royal Canin when I took the sample today.
