Considering giving him up :(

My cat started weeing in my living room. About 3 months ago. It seemed to coinside with a horrible cat outside staring at him through the back window. My cat is an indoor cat, always has been (his choice)
I have tried everything to make him stop. Feliway plug ins, pet remedy plug ins, pet remedy spray, I put curtains up at back door, extra litter trays, cystease capsules, calmex recommended by vet, numerous vet visits, all the cleaning things you can buy and absolutely nothing has worked. I've put puppy pads down now and am cleaning every day. My house stinks. I'm absolutely miserable. It's making me feel so low. I never thought I'd get to this point and i feel horrific about it but I'm thinking I might have to give him up. Next thing is I'll rip up the carpet and put down lino which I cannot afford to do.

I can only offer support as we’re having similar problems with ours.
ours kept doing it on the bedroom carpet so now we keep the door shut and she doesn’t wee in other rooms(poos in them though!).
could you keep them out of the living room?

Tried keeping him out of the living room, the way my house is the only way I can do that is by shutting him in one room and he just cries and cries and cries and I can't take it. I can't sleep.

How old is he @Dontknowwhattodo223 ?

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 21/10/2024 20:05

And how long have you had him?

I remember your previous thread I'm sorry nothing is working - I really feel for you as I've gone through this with cats before and it totally wears you down

Have you tried prosac? I had a cat who was stress peeing and was ready to rehome him and a low dose of prosac every day made a huge difference

We had a pen built with indoor and outdoor areas.

Completely cleaned the house etc.

They only came in under supervision, it helped a lot.

And you've had him 12 years/since he was a kitten?

RandomMess · 21/10/2024 20:12

Oh no at 12 that's old to change habits.

Sorry, I should have put more details in the original post. I've had him since he was 5, he's a rescue which makes me feel even worse :(

We had one like this, a lovely lad but he peed on everything. The vet tried, we tried, but to no effect. In the end we took the heart-breaking decision to have him put down. We could have had him rehomed, but with his incontinence problems, they said they would have had problems finding anyone to take him.

KittyGetSmall · 21/10/2024 20:14

I think at 12 it would be kinder to PTS than rehome

My cat pissed in the hall once about 3 months ago and I keep getting whiffs of it still so I can't imagine what you're dealing with :(

You've tried.

No I haven't. The vet did talk about anti depressant type medications but said due to side effects its a last resort. But it's probably coming to that now.

Nearly 7 years :(

Sorry cross post.

Yeah I think if I had tried absolutely everything, I would be struggling to keep a pet who makes me miserable and stresses me out. Pets are meant to bring us joy, not misery. One of my cats kept peeing up the kitchen floor units, and all over the lino when we were in a private let, and had no catflap. It even went up the wall!

She couldn't do it in the litter properly and her arse was always pointing upwards, and the pee went everywhere! It got me down so bad. I knew we were moving soon though so tolerated it for 5-6 months. I don't think I could have stuck it forever/the duration of kitty's life - another 15 years at the time.

RedRobyn2021 · 21/10/2024 20:17

You shouldn't have to live like this OP, you're right it's time for the last resort

I love my cats but definitely wouldn't put up with this

Hmmm I don't know if PTS is the answer. It's another cat who has scared him into this bad habit. He's not ill.

But at his age he's unlikely to stop now, look at how many things she's tried.

And if she sends him to a shelter nobody is going to adopt an elderly incontinent cat. He will be so stressed in a shelter.

This is the thing. He didn't like being in the shelter I adopted him from and I know no one will take a 12 year old cat that wees in the house. He is timid as it is. I know he will be miserable there. God, its just such a shit situation and I feel awful about it all. I feel like he isn't very happy otherwise he wouldn't be weeing in the house and I'm feeling so unhappy too.

What does he eat?

Does he have lots of enrichment?

Does he have things to climb?
