Seeking the advice of people who will have more experience of caring for cats.

Our cat (4) has had diarrhoea now for about 4 days and we're taking him to the vet today.

Do they do stool samples usually? I do have a pot at home so thinking I'd take one in then and there if that's something they'd want anyway.

Thanks

They didn’t want a sample when we took one of ours in (we’d bagged one up and taken photos as there was blood in it). They didn’t seem keen to take it though. Hope Dcat is soon better. (Ours had just eaten a fly or something and was right as rain in a couple of days).

Ours have never asked for a sample.

They'll probably give you probiotic paste to try first - stool tests are very expensive and not always necessary ime

No, they didn't ask for one.

He is of course snubbing his special food, and not eating his usual food with his medicine in it 🙄

I have a similar issue with Tobias, except his has gradually got worse over time rather than suddenly starting. As per typical cat, both he and Girlcat refused to go near either the (ridiculously expensive) special food or anything that had the probiotic paste in or on.

After spending a small fortune on Amazon trying different brands, I have found a brand of probiotic powder that they will accept in their wet food. Fingers crossed that it starts to have some effect! I've also moved them on to a special gut help kibble.

My vets told me that getting a stool sample analysed costs in the region of £200, and the majority of cases the probiotics do the trick. And that as long as he's looking healthy, acting normally, and not losing weight (I wish!) not to worry until we've given probiotics a bit of time.

As they share everything, Girlcat (who was already healthy) will have the most perfect gut in the county!
