When can I switch from kitten food to adult food?

My kittens are 7 months old now but from the start have been little fusspots. Whiskers kitten food was rejected early on, felix got me the look of pure disgust and they seem to be ok with Sheeba, but can still lick all the gravy off and leave the meat sometimes. They always have whiskers kitten biscuits down which they love and eat a lot of (they drink a lot from their fountain so not worried).

Me and DP are currently poorly so had to just get what we could from the local shop. Ended up with Sheeba adult food. They seem to love it. They eat every bit.

Can I switch to this or is it too early?

The recommendation is to keep them on kitten food until they are 12 months due to them needing the extra protein.

The best quality kitten and cat foods can only be found online. And delivery to your door which is perfect during illness!

We have always fed ours Acana. (Dry) Our last cat would only eat Acana and lived til she was 18, a great age for an outdoor cat. Never ailed a thing until the very end (cancer)

We have 6 month old kittens are they are on acana kitten. There is a wet acana kitten but ours did not like it at all. They love the dry though. It is an american food but available uk.

Very good quality so what seems expensive for a bag lasts longer due to them being satisfied on less.

Thanks for your message. I think ours much prefer dry food too but I just worry about UTI. I read online that dry food can be bad for boy cats so I try and push the mix of wet and dry. Seems like it’s potentially not as bad as I thought though?

Have they been neutered? I'm sure I read that once neutered their calorie needs can reduce. I'm sure we switched around 9 months.

Sheba seems to do a kitten food now too. Maybe could try that.

Yes they are neutered. That’s interesting you say that as since neutering they have got a little bit chunkier but I thought they were just due a growth spurt.

The Sheena kitten is the one they will tolerate but for some reason they much prefer the adult version. The kitten one they lick the gravy off and leave a lot of the meat.

We've been feeding our kitten the Whiskas kitten dry food and a tin of untamed wet food a day (delivered). The untamed is very high protein and she hoovers it, particularly the fish ones. Until they are one they will only offer you the meat in jelly, but once they are adult they can have the gravy recipes too.

Personally I wouldn't feed Whiskas dry food to male cats - it's really not good for them. If they like dry, I would go for the highest quality food that you can afford. Zooplus is a great option for food and they often have loads of trial packs so you don't commit to a massive amount.

Yes, i worried about that too. Our cat was female. We did try to get her onto wet later in life but she wasn't having any of it! Every time we offered wet, it was rejected and she went out, killed a shrew and placed it on top of the uneaten food!!!

It was like a protest. So, went back to dry acana. She had a geriatric cat check at 16yrs and her kidneys were fine then.

At 18, it was her liver enzymes that were raised and she stopped eating. A scan revealed liver cancer.

I will say that, for outdoor cats, killings are hugely reduced on acana. Not eliminated but way reduced. It is such high quality, it seems to satisfy them and they just sleep and settle well on it.

I'd say upto a year you could feed them kitten food. But it's not that big a deal if you stop after about 4-6 months. I think all mine were on normal food after about 3-4 months.
Don't worry if he only likes dried food. As long as there's plenty of water he'll be fine. Sone dried foods have soft bits in them so you could try one with different pieces in it?
Offer wet food in the mornings as that's the most likely time they tend to eat it I've found. But they don't need it specifically.
