Providing high places for your DCat to hang out. How do you do it?

DCat likes to be up high. Cat trees seem flimsy unless they're £££ and not particularly high or comfortable. So what do you have in your lounges to meet your cats desire for a high place to hang out?

Depends what you mean by flimsy, and expensive. I'm finally on my second, first one lasted 8 years & stood up to nearly 5kg of Girlcat taking flying leaps from the sofa back (over a year away) onto the upper perches. Similar at the mo (5 feet tall) can be got for around £40-50.

Tall bookcases or similar with spaces strategically left empty at all levels. Floating display type shelves on the walls, a few sort of leading up to the highest one - you can even get ones specially designed as cat perches with carpet or sisal covers for grip. And you can get cat hammocks that attach to the inside of windows which can be placed at a good height.

Have a look on YouTube for Jackson Galaxy "catification" videos, he has brilliant solutions.

A decent cat tree shouldn't be too flimsy - we have three cats including a 7kg boy and ours has lasted a couple of years - I think it cost me £50 or so off Amazon.

Mine tend to sit on normal bookshelves or tables - they don't like being too high.

Not in the lounge but ours likes an Amazon box on top of the fridge/freezer. When we first got him he alternated between a high bookcase in the living room and the top of the fridge for a week, only coming down to eat or use the litter tray. He now mainly sleeps in one of two identical cat beds by either the kitchen or living room radiator, or on the sofa with the heated throw, but still hops into the box I stuck up there with a blanket in it for him on occasion. Weirdly we have big trees in the garden that our previous cat loved, but I have never seen him climb one!

We got small shelves from B&Q and some fancy metal brackets, then put a set of shelf steps up to an overdoor big shelf and down again. Covered them with carpet tiles attached via hot glue gun. They love them.

We have a large cat barrel.

I haven't got a cat but saw a cool video the other day - they'd put shelves and tubes on the wall high up.

Look on zooplus, their ‘flower’ cat tree is a very good value, robust and heavy thing. I don’t know how old mine is but I recently re-roped the lower part as it was ripped by lots of kittens when I used to breed but th construction is very sturdy.
We’ve also drilled dens and shelves into the walls but my now 6 year old only cat just ignores them.
