Does anyone have a cat with a sensitive stomach/is sick a lot?

I posted on here the other day about my cat who was throwing up. The vet said he just has a bit of an upset stomach. He does get diharrea quite easily, so I do think his stomach is a bit delicate. Although he has never really thrown up before until now. He is still on boiled chicken for the time being, but after this I would like to transition him onto a very gentle food that isn’t too rich or heavy and is made for sensitive stomachs/reduce sickness. Does anyone have any experience of this? I have googled it but there’s so many options that I would like to hear from people who have actually tried and tested them and know which ones really work.

thank you!

Hi,,,yes my cat used to throw up a lot, every day. I changed his food and it suddenly stopped.

Obviously it may be a completely different reason for your cat, it’s just what worked for us.

I started feeding her a raw diet. This was 4 years ago and I know feed her half raw, half Applaws and she’s fine.

Which food was he on and which did you change to?

My cat used to vomit a lot. He also has really sensitive skin. So we changed him onto sensitivity control wet and dry food, and it's helped a lot with his stomach and his skin. He never had diarrhea though, so obviously it's slightly different. The vet brands like Hills and Royal Canin have a few different options. I think it tastes good as my other cat always tries to steal his brother's biscuits!

Hills digestive care works for our cat with similar issues.

One of our cats has an inflammatory bowel condition (lots of very upset tummies and he lost quite a lot of weight). After lots of investiagtions, infection and tumours were ruled out and we went down the allergy/ inflammation route and cut out all grains and cereals and some protein sources to try and give his gut a rest.

He's done really well on Katkin. We started with the pork one as it's single protein source and his upset stomach settled wth a few weeks. We've been able to reintroduce other varieties slowly and he can now tolerate chicken/ turkey / duck. They had a few packaging/ production issues initially that seem to now be resolved.

It's more cost effective to order the largest size pouches and make them last a couple of days. The downside is it requires quite a bit of freezer space. Here's a intro code if you do decide to try it, Katkin 50%

We tried him on a raw food diet (Bella&Duke) but he won't touch it whereas he's quite happy to tuck into Katkin food.

We have previously used Katkin and Scrumbles but they both changed their recipe and production and the cats refused the new version. I have good experience with tinned Encore chicken food now. One of our cats is a dustbin and likes eg Felix pouches but if either of the other two eat any they are immediately sick

My cat was vomiting a bit and a vet advised me to feed the cat earlier in the day and more regularly. It worked. It seems some cats develop stomach acid/reflux if they have to wait for food. Worth a try to see if it makes a difference.

We do - pretty much every day, was a nightmare. Vet advised the Royal Canin Gastrointestinal dry food and boiled chicken so that's what she gets every day now. We tried various brands of wet food and she either wouldn't eat or got ill from all the ones we tried, so we stuck with the chicken chopped up with a bit of salt-free chicken broth on it. It's an absolute pain in the arse to keep boiling chicken 3 times a week but she's so much happier and - touch wood - hasn't been sick in a year.

Does having the chicken help with the sickness? So it’s better to have the chicken as well, instead of just the dry food alone?

We give Cat One Hill’s i/d and he’s stopped vomiting and is putting on weight.
He still eats other wet food; has one serve of the digestive care once a day.
He’s supposed to have the wet food too, but he refuses to eat that.

My cat is like that with wet as well. He is very fussy with what wet food he will eat and when we find one that he likes, he will randomly decide he doesn’t like it anymore. So I probably would prefer to try and find a dry food for him because that will probably be more successful. I may end up wasting a lot of money trying to find a wet food that he will eat

I feed scrumbles good for gut food for this

learieonthewildmoor · 07/10/2024 15:55

We had to introduce the food slowly to him, increasing the amount incrementally.
I mixed it into his wet food. He was still vomiting while we did this, and then it took effect.

Felix did. He was put on the R/C gastrointestinal wet food. At first he was still throwing up. He was a scarfer and barfer though. In the end the Vet advised on half a sachet, then give him a break for a few hours before letting him have the other half. He did also have the biscuits too but wasn't overly keen on them. He was on that food for years, then one time they ran out of it and gave him the Hills one. He literally turned his nose up at it so I was really pleased once his normal food came back in. I did eventually just put him onto Harrington and Webox grain free foods due to the cost of the R/C each month. It was also much easier to half a sachet cos it's in jelly rather than gravy and then in the final few weeks of his life he went onto pate type foods which I blended up with a little water to make it easier for him to eat. Although the last maybe 1-2 weeks he wouldn't eat anything at all just the odd lick of lick e lix and gallons of water but that was more than likely due to all the toxins in his body from his failed kidneys
