Knots in cat coat

Any tips for dealing with long hair cats and the knots they get seemingly on a daily basis. My boy cat in particular has a really shaggy chest and he’s always working out a knot or 2.

I’ve got a fine comb and also a pad brush but the hairs underneath are so fine they get matted really easily.

any tips please, my cats are Himalayan breed

Tangle teaser for daily brushing, and a professional groom every few months. Failing that, I shave the knots.

I used a small flea comb on my 1/2 Maine Coone fluffy boy. I wait until he sits on me then stroke him they gradually start to comb in tiny sections. I might do his chest one day, top of head and under chin another day, back legs another day. He doesn't really mind because I only ever spend 3-4 minutes at a time. The only bit he's not keen on me touching is his Basil Brush fluffy tail. You can also get an anti tangle spray. I don't use that on my cats but I do on my dogs.

Thanks, I do brush the boy most days esp his glorious chest but I can feel knots underneath the longer hairs. They are being sent for grooming today, I will see what the groomer suggests.

shaving the knots might be an idea, they’re too wriggly to use scissors

I groom my girl daily with a Furminator. Her fur is short but it’s triple layered.

I would also recommend a furminator. They're amazing

Really long haired cats should be groomed daily - not always easy I know!

Otherwise, do what you can and shave or cut any knots out as necessary.

Furminators are not good for long haired cats. They only take off the top coat. Penelope had a hair cut yesterday, all I can say it's a good job she can't see herself!

What type of brush should I use on my scruffy kitten? At the moment he doesn't have any knots and feels quite silky, but I want to get him used to brushing for the future.

Interested in this as I feel like the worst cat owner. My boy is fluffy and full of mats. I have tried so hard. Took him to vets once and they buzzed him but he hated it.
We have tried to groom him since he was a kitten but it would take four of us to hold him down. I have every brush and clipper. We manage to get one knot every few days by distracting him with a treat but I need a new strategy.

The groomers gave him a buzz cut in the hairiest areas, he also recommended a brush with much longer bristles than the one I had to penetrate the thicker coat. He seems happier and looks like a kitten again. I’ll look into the furminator and untangle spray.

The groomer also said once you’ve given them a buzz cut the new hair comes back much easier to manage so maybe that’s something to try when your kitten gets older @bluedomino and @Bgfe
