Are there any pedigree breeds that like to go outside and are generally quite street savvy?

I have Orientals that go out (only in daytime and good weather!) and there are BSH down my street that also go outside. Again, they tend to stay close to home.
Friend of mine has Persians - they are housecats.

haggisaggis · 23/09/2024 15:02

My Maine Coon loved to go out. He was a good hunter. Wasn’t great at climbing trees though - had to get a tree surgeon to bring him down once.

CeliaCanth · 23/09/2024 15:03

I have two BSH who go out in the daytime but always come in at night. (I live in a fairly quiet rural village.)

My Maine coon liked to go out and hunt. She'd have been miserable as an indoor cat.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/09/2024 16:21

My Persians are not street scat at all. They stay in my enclosed garden,

My BSH does the exact same. Happy to potter in the garden in the day, inside all night.
She's reasonably street smart (runs from cars, dogs, some people, but will face down other cats with fervour).

LetsTalk12 · 23/09/2024 16:25

Apart of being hit by the car... my biggest worry would be someone stealing my cat.

One of my old neighbours had two BSH and they have her been stolen, both didn't wonder too far from the house.

fleeceyjumper · 23/09/2024 16:31

Yes, Arabian Maus!

Beamur · 23/09/2024 16:54

I do worry about theft tbh. But I have decided to take that risk. They're not terribly friendly cats to people they don't know.

CurlewKate · 24/09/2024 06:46

I have always had outdoor cats mostly moggies but one Burmese- I believe that you have to accept the fact that they are more at risk in order to give them a proper "cat life"

Can I ask-how do people know that their cat has been stolen? If it's an outdoor cat, I mean?

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 24/09/2024 07:41

My parent's maine coones loved going outside, so did their Persian.

freeandfierce · 24/09/2024 07:45

My Maine coone loves being out on all weathers, straight over the fence. My sphynx is more fussy depending on the weather, he hates rain. He stays pretty close to the house though and doesn't wander too far.
I have lots of cats that use my garden as a walkthrough so I tend to be around whilst they are out on standby to break up a fight. Don't need a huge vet bill!

hereismydog · 24/09/2024 07:57

Definitely on both the breed and the individual personality of the cat. My Mum has a rescue Ragdoll who has cotton wool where his brain should be and couldn’t possibly be trusted to roam, so he has an enclosed garden. Not to mention he is absolutely beautiful, very friendly and would definitely be stolen!

My friend has a crotchety old Persian who walks the streets like he owns them. Everyone knows who he is and where he lives, he’s a local celebrity.

There was a lovely Bengal in my village who covered a lot of ground and was incredibly street savvy, more so than most cats, but he still got knocked over and killed last year Sad

Another friend has several BSHs who are indoor/outdoor and come home every night with no exceptions.

I have a rescue who looks Siamese (she was found as part of an abandoned litter, so nobody knows), she’s cross-eyed with terrible nystagmus and the vet isn’t sure if her vision is affected, plus she has pica so she is an indoor cat, with supervised access to our catproof garden as even though she can’t get out of the angled fence, she has tried in the past and hurt herself in the process. She would also try to eat the wooden fence posts if she wasn’t supervised!

CharlotteLightandDark · 24/09/2024 08:05

My Maine Coon goes outside the back in mine and the neighbouring gardens, she doesn’t wander far and she isn’t allowed out the front though (terraced houses).

I also don’t let her out at night.

Thank you for your replies everyone, really good to get an insight into their behaviours. It looks like a Maine Coon may suit us, if we choose to go down the pedigree route.

Might as well get a dog Grin they are fecking HUGE (and I’d love one, so please do get one!)

Yes, Arabian Maus!

OMG @fleeceyjumper I have an Arabian Mau and my worst nightmare is him getting out out. He's allowed in our walled garden but no way is he street smart so kudos to you!!

AnnaMagnani · 24/09/2024 19:43

Arabian Maus terrorise the neighbourhood though. I love mine to bits but he is currently under house arrest.
