Kitten pooing on the carpet and stepping in it

Hi - hope I can get some advice here! We have recently got a gorgeous kitten, she is almost 14 weeks old and is an angel in every way, except when it comes to pooing! We have two litter trays, one upstairs and one downstairs. They are cleaned regularly and in quiet spots. No other animals in the house. She always pees in the litter trays, so she knows where they are and would indicate that the litter itself is ok for her?? But she consistently poos on other carpeted areas of the house and then walks through it, resulting in a traumatic paw cleaning experience! Any advice please?! Thank you!

Is she pooing in a specific spot on the carpet?

user1463259315 · 22/09/2024 20:22

She prefers my son’s bedroom carpet, but is also not opposed to our bedroom carpet! Downstairs is all hard flooring so she doesn’t go there.

Can I suggest just one litter tray and puppy pads on the carpet??? Especially if she keeps having accidents in the same spot. You might want to teach her how to dig a hole for any solids x. Btw she's gorgeous x

Beautiful x

What kind of litter are you using? Because cats bury their poo, they often don't like digging in rough litter as it hurts their paws.

You might want to try a special kitten litter or something softer for now.

Our cat won’t poo in her little trays if there is already a wee in it, is it 100% clean during the accidents? Is the litter ‘comfortable’ to dig in?

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 22/09/2024 21:17

Plant based litter is softer on delicate paws.

Are you using a covered litter tray?

If you only have one cat, I'd suggest putting both litter trays together. She may have decided to use one for peeing and won't poop in it too.

Puppy pads are also an excellent idea.

Ours is the same!

But he's taught himself to wee in the toilet now so litter tray is only for poos

Honestly, I'd be inclined to keep her to one room, or a couple of rooms, for now. Ragdolls are beautiful but not the brightest cats, and she's very young to have the run of the house.

(We have a fluffy cat who is as dim as she's beautiful too.)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I will try them all 😊

I tried the suggestion to dig a hole in the litter for her this morning. Shortly after she did a poo in the tray, buried it herself and no poo paws! Yay!!! Thank you! I hope this will do the trick, if not I’ll try the other suggestions.
