As tinned tuna is cheaper!!

The cat has a special diet but is allowed a small amount of wet food....but I'll buy tuna if its the same as its half the price!

Too much tuna made for humans can cause mercury poisoning. Plus it lack nutrients cats need. One offs are ok if no cat food at home but not regularly.

Scampuss · 20/09/2024 12:22

Depends if you're comparing to a complete food or a complementary food. Applaws isnt a complete food so should only be fed as an occasional treat.

Singleandproud · 20/09/2024 12:24

I give tinned tuna (in spring water) as a treat. Perhaps not a whole tin but is great for adding medication to.

KatyMac · 20/09/2024 13:37

She has about a quarter of a tin a day

There are no additives or supplements in the applaws apparently (according to the tin I have)

Why does cat food tuna have less Mercury than people tuna?

this is from their website

"Applaws Tuna Fillet features human-grade tuna that is wild-caught using Earth Island Certified, dolphin-friendly methods. Applaws tests for mercury in all of their fish ingredients and uses Bonito tuna for this recipe, which is much lower in mercury than traditional tuna."

KatyMac · 20/09/2024 13:46

Tbh it sounds like we should eat that tuna not the cats

I think Applaws is better quality than a lot of human food. The chicken ones are 100% chicken breast in a bit of broth. If you compare that to things like cans of chicken in white sauce for people then it's obvious which is better!

Vinvertebrate · 20/09/2024 15:05

Cats need taurine to survive and I gather it’s not in tinned tuna. Fine to feed as a complementary food though.

ginasevern · 20/09/2024 15:07

Yeah, you can't use tinned tuna all the time for your cat. It's too rich and not balanced enough. OK as an occasional treat or in an emergency if you've run out of cat food though.

dementedpixie · 20/09/2024 15:09

Tinned tuna for people tends to have added salt as well which cat food won't have

Isn't it?? I always thought it was. Which companies apart from Thrive are complete?

I know tinned tuna must be given to cats on a regular basis.

Toddlerteaplease · 20/09/2024 16:57

I was wondering the same thing. Penelope inhaled a tiny tin of thrive. But it's expensive. So have bought some human tuna in spring water.

I'm pretty sure Thrive is complete, it certainly was when I fed it to my old boy a few years ago.

Tuna can't be given on regular basis as too much mercury and no turine which they need. Agree thrive expensive, does anyone know a pure complete food equally as good?

Toddlerteaplease · 20/09/2024 18:23

I’m only going to give it as an occasional treat.

CookiePookie · 20/09/2024 18:27

I used to feed mine Untamed, which is complete, until they went off it of course. It is excellent quality. I don't know if it'll be cheaper than Thrive though - but they do a trial box to test it out.

KatyMac · 20/09/2024 19:44

She has Pro Plan Delicate Digestion Dry Adult Cat Food Turkey most of the time but likes a bit of wet food

The applaws is silly expensive

I give human tuna once a month, just a third of a very small tin a day.

ichundich · 21/09/2024 08:29

I never buy the expensive high % tuna or chicken cat food; always share a bit of mine instead. The cat goes crazy as soon as I take the tin out of the cupboard. I only give it to her occasionally though, less than once a week.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 21/09/2024 21:20

Our last cat was like a wild thing if a tin of tuna was opened - on her final day she had a whole can before we took her to the vet, with Philadelphia cheese on the side. I think it was an excellent last meal for an excellent cat.

Our new boy is an ex stray and a little food thief. He’s delighted if I make a tuna baked potato and gets a little bit of tuna in spring water on a saucer. This week he has also had a go at a chicken pie resting on the side, and gobbled up feta cheese that fell on the ground.
