Preventing litter smells

Less than a week in with a 15 month old rescue cat. He’s settling in really well. However the litter tray smell hits me as soon as I enter the house. I am using catsan it’s changed every day or so. If anything solid happens it’s fished out immediately. It’s an open litter tray.
Arethe closed ones any good? Any other recommendations?
Just before I got him I looked after another, older cat for three weeks in my home. No problem with smells then.
Please help and advise

What food is he on? Some foods produce stinkier waste than others. Mine eat mostly dry food so not much smell.

I use Cats Best litter which works really well.

Clumping litter.
Then you scoop out the urine lumps twice a day too.
I used a really good one from BM called Stayfresh - only about £4 a bag.

I think open litter tray fine if kept in right area - mine was tucked away in utility room.

Food makes a big difference too. Good quality food smells better. I used good quality dry food and then fed tuna or chicken as treats from time to time.
Cat also drank plenty of water,

Try sprinkling bicarbonate of soda over the litter.

Plant based clumping litter like Greenwood's or SuperBenek will reduce odour, however if he's only a week in it can take some time for them to adjust to a change of diet.

Rescue cats that have been living outdoors especially take time.

Intersand Classic cat litter. If you are scooping regularly as you say there is 0 smell. I have 3 cats and use Intersand Multicat... no smell!

Bohemond23 · 20/09/2024 12:49

I second Cat's best litter - never smells.

Danikm151 · 20/09/2024 12:49

Wooden litter- scoop any poop straight away.

Malvala · 20/09/2024 12:50

Bless him, he probably needs time for his tummy to adjust.

The higher quality cat food will help with stinky poo. Stress often causes issues with their digestion. Hopefully it’ll settle down. In the meantime all the suggestions above are great.

Intersand is fantastic, lasts ages too which offsets the cost as it's not cheap!

Though I've been blessed with a cat whose shit don't stink, which is handy.

I personally prefer covered trays due to the smell. That said I know cat an automatic litter tray and that's brilliant. No smells, empty the drawer every other day or so (I have multiple cats)

Agree with what the others say, diet etc will make a difference. Personally I find clumping less smelly then others too. I use supermarket own brand as the big brand stuff was expensive and not really any better IME

WetBandits · 20/09/2024 12:55

My 3 are raw fed, so they do tiny, non-stinky poos.

I use Sanicat Clumping litter, scoop the trays for wee morning and night and remove any poo as soon as I see it. I sprinkle in a tiny bit of Simple Solution litter freshening powder and mix it into the litter when I do the evening scoop.

Fresh trays and no stinkiness!

Dontbesaft · 20/09/2024 12:57

Thankyou for all your help. I will try a different litter.
Its actually not his poo that smells, it’s a strong urine smell

Maybe get him checked out at the vet.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 20/09/2024 15:04

His urine shouldn't smell - I'd want him checked at the vet for a UTI.

WhereAreWeNow · 20/09/2024 15:07

Try different litter. We use Sanicat clumping. It makes it easier to get the wee out. We tried a biodegradable pellet type litter recently and the ammonia smell of the wee was so strong. Switched back to Sanicat and it's manageable again.
To be honest, the closed tray doesn't really seem to make a difference to smell. It's just nice not to have to see it!
