Am I feeding kitten enough?

I have a 5 month old kitten, and she's always hungry.

Just as background, she's:

  • got a delicate stomach, (we're regularly worming her, as prescribed by the vet, they checked her over, gave special food, fibre and biotics) and she's still happy in herself and gaining weight. So they're not concerned.
  • we had her on a high protein food, grain free but it didn't (including the vet prescribed one) help with her bowel issues.
  • we finally figured out her stomach doesn't deal well with chicken. And bowels are back to normal (yay!) we've cut out dry food.

But, she's always hungry. I give her four pouches per day. When I put food in she often wolfs it down. Once I gave in and gave her 1.5 pouch in a meal and it went through her.

Should I be giving more than 4 pouches per day? The vet says kittens are vocal and not to worry as she's gaining weight but I just want to make sure I'm not underfeeding her.

Thanks if you made it this far!

Maybe give her more frequent meals? 6 a day rather than 4? 5 month old kittens are growing fast, she probably is hungry.

@CocoapuffPuff I give her four (sometimes five) pouches over 6-8 meals. So half a pouch at a time. The first and last pouch being full ones. If I give her more frequent food, or full pouches within a short space of time, she gets loose bowels.

I'll up the food in frequency and add more pouches and see how it goes.

Ah okay, well we don't want runny bums so it sounds like you're spot on. I haven't had a kitten with a sensitive tummy. Our 3 were and still are happy on any food, as long as there's lots of it. Good luck, she's clearly full of energy.

Does she also have dry food to graze on? If not, maybe try that.

@MidnightMeltdown unfortunately I'd love that but when I've tried dried food (even one vet gave) she had poo leaking from her butt 😅 so I'm cautious not to give it. My other cat is fine with any food, I'm just mindful of the kitten and so give her food I know her sensitive belly can handle.
