New rescue cat excessively vocal

I would appreciate some advice with my new rescue cat. She is extremely vocal but to the extent it’s becoming a bit much.

I adopted her a week ago from my local CP shelter. She is 3 and had been left for rehoming after her owner was evicted and couldn’t bring her to the new property. She lived with another cat but they were separated because the staff decided they were making each other anti-social with humans, hiding behind each other and not interacting with people.

The staff said she was timid so I gave her one room to settle into. I spent a lot of time sitting with her and talking to her and she came out within 2 days. She is spending time with the family now and not hiding away but she meows and yowls constantly. The only time she is quiet is when she is sleeping or at night when we are upstairs. I can stop it for a while by fussing over her but she starts again not long after.

The meowing is very loud and insistent and almost like she is in heat (she isn’t because she was neutered by CP). I can’t work, make phone calls or watch tv because she’s so loud. She wanted to explore upstairs and meowed until I let her, then froze while up on the landing and started wailing. I was very worried because I’ve not seen a cat act like this. it took ages to persuade her to come down. My last cat was fairly quiet and settled quickly so I’m not used to it.

I’ve noticed she isn’t eating very much either. Her dry food is left out all the time and I’ve tried feeding her chicken or wet food but she just sniffs or picks at it. Is this behaviour because she’s still settling in and unsure of herself? Could she be missing her old life? She seems happy and purrs, rolls to show her belly and stuff like that. She is also very playful and she has a lot of toys here - puzzle feeders, balls, string mice, feather toys etc.

Any advice would be gratefully received because I’m not sure what to do.

Ours is a talker and really loud and annoying. No reason he’s just telling you about his day, he wants attention, he needs food, he’s bored etc etc. It’s infuriating especially when you’re trying to relax or at 3am but I know one day I’ll miss the constant noise.

Since you've excluded the possibility that she's hungry/ lonely/in pain then it could also be she's wondering what the story is/where the other cat has gone? We recently lost our cat's sister and despite having no apparent interest in her whatsoever while she was alive in the period immediately following her death he was like the lonely fucking goatherd. It's calmed down now but he's overall way more of chatterbox. He does it for effect, shouts at the birds and announces he's home like Fred Flintstone, I also talk back, which he seems to like. If it doesn't stop maybe start a podcast?

How's your boy doing @pointythings ? Hope he's ok

He's doing well, settled on meds and kidney diet food, he's gained back the lost weight and has his energy back. He's on 6 monthly checkups and we'll just see how he goes, but for now he's living his best life.

Ah that's good news!

Some cats are just chatty.

Our orange boy talks constantly - and I swear he's taught our older voids to do the same as they've both been much more talkative since he came along Grin

A friend was here a few weeks ago when I was due to feed them and she found it hilarious that they all started screaming at me for their dinner 😂

My cat meows when her blood sugar is out of whack. We adopted her and found out she was diabetic after a couple of years but I suspect she’d been ill that whole time as she’d always been mega thirsty and weed a lot, would poop on the floor etc and was just a very strange little personality a lot of the time!

The only time she really meows loudly is when she’s having a hypo.

With the appetite issue it might be worth getting your kitty checked over. She’s beautiful btw!

We had a shouty rescue. It was as if he needed to announce every move he made with a loud commentary - lovely when he decided to do it at 3am. During Covid my colleagues thought it was hilarious when he did it mid Teams meeting

I miss him dreadfully! I'd give anything to hear those yowls and shrieks again.
