Repairing a sisal rope scratching post

Is it possible and is it worth it?

I did it for one pole on the cat tree but wasn't a particularly great job. Cost £8 for the roll of sisal and £4 for glue (you need really strong stuff) for 60cm of scratching pole.

It was really hard to get the sisal to sit properly tight as I wound it round and so it's wonky with gaps. Not helped as I got fatter diameter sisal than was already on the pole and I think the thinner stuff would have been easier to handle. Was very messy with the glue too - I used No More Nails but I don't think it really suited sisal as it didn't feel like it dried properly and stil feels a bit sticky.

Cat seems a bit unimpressed too - he's not scratching it anywhere near as much as he used to. I think I'm just going to buy a new cat tree as they aren't that expensive.

We looked at it recently and by the time we'd bought the sisal and a hot glue gun it was cheaper to buy a new scratch post. I've since discovered that a friend has a hot glue gun we could borrow, so may consider it again when the new one is looking ragged.

I got a replacement trunk for mine that just screwed into the old base - was abou the same price as buying the rope and glue.

Where did you get it from?

I have this scratching post. https://www.petplanet.co.uk/p17848/smartcat_ultimate_scratching_post.aspx

It is much loved and used. After five years it was in tatters, so I paid a handyman to re-cover it. Got a length of cord carpet on Freecyle. Cost £20 for the handyman, but better than chucking the post and it going to landfill.

The new cover should be nailed on, glue won't be strong enough.

I've replaced the sisal on our cat tree twice, I got the sisal from Amazon and used PVA glue.
I started putting the new stuff on using a heavy duty staple gun to attach the end of the rope and then hammered the staple flat so the cats wouldn't catch their claws on it and then applied lots of the glue and tightly wound the rope round the cardboard tube. When I got to the end I used another staple.
The cats use it as much as they always did so I think that they approve of my handiwork!
