Insurance advice

I'm hoping for some advice about insurance for my 5 month old moggy girls. No obvious health issues. They've been spayed and chipped and we're just starting to let them out into the garden, which backs onto a load of other gardens. We live on the edge of a city, surrounded by reasonably quiet residential streets (for risk assessment context).

We got 4 weeks free with PetPlan when we took them to the vet for the first time. When that expired I didn't renew because I got a bit flummoxed by all the options and put it off. Now they're beginning to go out I've been looking again and I'm feeling even more confused.

I thought I'd narrowed it down to Sainsburys (£23 per month for £5k lifetime), but then I saw some bad reviews and now I'm wondering if it's worth shelling out the extra tenner a month and just going for PetPlan...

What do you think? Go for a 'budget' option and hope they don't quibble paying out, or ramp the premiums up as soon as I claim? Or go with the expensive option right from the start?

Alternatively, is the level of cover I'm looking at over the top? Should I just put some money aside each month and hope for the best? It seems like once they get to a certain age the excess goes up so much it's hardly worth it anyway?

It was two cats spread over five years. Completely random things each time!

Ah, I see. Scary how it can add up! I hope they're both doing ok now.

They have both now died. 3rd cat had no claims till the week she died. 4th cat had cost about 3k in the space of a year. But she's doing better now. 5th cat is ok touch wood!

It just seems unbelievable that the cost of insuring 2 (fabulous) cats is more than it costs to insure my entire house! I get that the likelihood of me claiming is much higher, but still!

That's because you are far more likely to claim on pet insurance than your house insurance.
As a vet all of my animals have 14K of cover and it includes dental.
