Should I take in kitten who knows what a garden is?

Hello,

For various reasons I am going to take in a kitten from a breeder (I already have a cat). I spoke with the breeder today and all seems well, but the kittens are having supervised time in the garden and I do not have a garden. The kitten will be 5 months by the time I would take it in.

They aren't outdoor cats, but they obviously know outdoors now and I wonder if it's responsible and wise to move him into an apartment only? I do have a balcony but it isn't the same as a garden.

What do wise mumsnetters think? Will it be difficult and unfair for the kitten to move in with us?

I've had 2 ex-feral cats (trapped by the rescue at one year old) and one stray who had been on the streets about 2 years. All have adapted very well to being indoor only cats - though there's always been 2 in the house at any time except for about 3 weeks between Boycat being PTS and Tobias coming home.

Obviously it would depend on the individual cat, some adjust easily and others don't. But as long as it has plenty of entertainment, places to go in the flat, and company it could work out fine.

Thanks @Allergictoironing for sharing your experience. My gut says he's the right cat for us. I dont really believe in it but I had this feeling the first time I saw his photo that he would come live with us. And I still enquired for one of his brothers initially despite having this feeling.

I'll sleep over it again and decide tomorrow.

Personally, I don't agree with choosing to keep cats inside unless there's a legitimate reason for doing so.

That said, it works for some cats but you'd need to think about what you'd do if the cat wasn't happy and became destructive or anxious.
