Talk to me about pointers?

it has been many years since i had a dog, and i don’t think His Majesty The Cat Emperor would approve right now, but i’m idly mulling over what kind i’d get when i am next able to.

a friend recently got a german pointer and i loved him - beautiful, good with kids, only averagely daft. downsides are that as a working line he needs a lot of exercise, and is a very skinny breed so i’d constantly feel he was half-starved but i have that same reaction to any greyhound-build.

has anyone had any other Pointers or similar breeds and has any recommendations (or dire warnings?) thank you

We have a rescue pointer cross and he is the best!
Very chilled out - Loves a sofa cuddle and he doesn't bark.
He is actually quite lazy -didn't get walked very far at the rescue.
He is very loyal. Loves people and kids and isn't bothered about other dogs.
I don't think I would ever have a different breed now.

I'm sorry to have to break this to you, OP, but this is the cat topic Grin

It is! Gah.
i had two tabs open and chose the wrong one for posting. I shall pay the cat tax and slink off to The Doghouse.

Thank you - i think on reflection “a pointer, but quite lazy” is exactly what i’m after. May have to investigate cross-breeds (i have small children, so rescues are unlikely to allow us to adopt). Thank you!

Oh what a lovely cat! I secretly think pointers are delights, but you would be VVU to upset that gorgeous feline!

Thank you! He’s very glad you agree with his self-assessment 😄

I wouldn't rely on any kind of pointer or pointer mix to be low energy - they're very much a working breed and can be incredibly high strung with strong prey drives.

I have a pointer of the English variety. I love him to bits- so goofy, happy and cuddly. He has an impeccable temperament and is very handsome. He is a typical EP however, and will range far and wide as they have been bred to do. He was a real firecracker when he was a pup but now he is 3, he is a lovely boy. They say about pointers that they cannot get close enough to you inside, or far enough away from you outside. The EP is oft referred to as the best kept secret of gundog world. I realise this is the cat thread so will mention that my 2 cats get along with my pointer and are in charge of him (as were the chickens when we had them).
