Kittens fighting

We have a pair of 14wk old sisters. I understand that fighting is a part of learning and playing, but it is so brutal. In particular at night. They have full access to the house and like to be where we are. So at night they come in our bedroom and just go crazy. They jump on us and fight, so we often get caught by the claws. Shutting them in somewhere else isnt an option, but its getting unbearable. We are absolutely shattered.
I looked at thise plug in behaviour things, but not sure I believe they work.
Can anyone offer advice for how to deal with this? Will they grow out of it, if so, when?!

Ime they need a Quiet Time room for sleep!! We had an open plan staircase until our dcat counter hit 6....then fil built us a frame +door to keep them contained.... Can't sleep through purring / bum washing/fighting.. ....

Surely there had to be a space you can shut them in overnight?

None of my cats have never ever been allowed upstairs overnight - it's too loud and chaotic.

I wouldn't expect them to calm down for at least another year!

Breadcat24 · 26/08/2024 09:41

we cannot advise without seeing a picture

We've always locked our cats downstairs for this reason! If they're allowed to roam upstairs at night they just wake everyone up!

They get shut in the kitchen & dining room where they have their food, cat flap and comfy beds.

Trinity69 · 26/08/2024 10:02

When we first got our kittens they stayed in the living room/kitchen. Now they’re almost 1 they have the run of the house but also go out so they’re tired at bedtime and sleep upstairs on the landing at night.

Floralnomad · 26/08/2024 10:05

Ours were shut into a spare bedroom at night until they were old enough to roam the house without getting into mischief . They are very good overnight now and sleep on top of the wardrobes in one of their beds .

Pob13 · 26/08/2024 12:57

We could shut them in the lounge but we dont really want to keep a litter tray in there forever. There is a tray in the kitchen but no space for a bed. I wonder what they would do if we shut our bedroom door, probably just scratch at it.
Has anyone used the feliway plug in things, with success?

Ours are shut away, always have done. They will sleep anywhere tbh. If the room is boring they soon learn they get a treat and go for the "big sleep".

Floralnomad · 26/08/2024 13:42

Very cute xx

sunsetsandboardwalks · 26/08/2024 13:51

I wouldn't shut them outside the bedroom as they'll just pester outside the door.

In the living room or kitchen is best.

Trinity69 · 26/08/2024 13:52

We’ve got our litter tray in the living room but luckily have a little hidey hole we can keep it in so it’s not on view. They barely use it now they’re outside as well but one literally walked in and did a stinky poo. 🤣

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 26/08/2024 13:54

Extremely cute. Do remember that cats are nocturnal, so keep out of the bedroom.

Kelly51 · 26/08/2024 14:03

I wouldn't be having kittens that young have free run if the whole house, living room/kitchen at night is plenty.

Augustisnearlydonesogoodbyesun · 26/08/2024 14:06

FYI dcats are not nocturnal

amylou8 · 26/08/2024 14:07

This is completely normal kitten behaviour I'm afraid. I know it looks brutal, but the are crazy like this for at least a year.
You need to shut them somewhere at night, with at least 2 doors between you and them, otherwise they'll just scratch at the bedroom door.
Mine are 17 and 5 and are always shut in the kitchen (with a cat flap to outdoors) overnight. If I don't they are climbing all over me, stalking my feet and being general PITAs.

Pob13 · 26/08/2024 15:09

Is it mean to shut them in after they have had freedom for a week?!

And thank you all for the advice.

Nope - it's fine. Just make sure they have everything they need and there's nothing they can destroy or hurt themselves on.

RandomMess · 26/08/2024 18:46

Of course it's not mean.

Give them some treat food when you go to bed, whistle too. Within a few weeks they will be whistle trained and demand to be put to bed with hard stares!!

forgotmyusername1 · 26/08/2024 22:58

We have 17 week old rescue kittens who have been with us for 3 weeks

I know exactly what you mean about kitten crazy time. It's like mma

When we got them we kept them in a room for a week while they get used to us. They now have that room, the kitchen and the lounge while we are awake and when we go to bed they get put back in their room which has their bed, toys, food and litter until the following morning. That way we know they are safe and so is our stuff.

Seeing how mad they go in the evening I can't imagine trying to sleep through it.
