I'm are going to collect a cat on Thursday and am both excited and nervous! Any tips for a novice cat owner? I've been told to get a large carrier, large open litter tray and a scratching post. We will be given a week's worth of food and a week's insurance. I'm hoping I can put his litter tray in the bathroom as there's not much space for it anywhere else.

He's like a tiny lion Grin

Have you kept his name or given him a new one ?

And we've kept his name , it's Pumpkin. We think it suits him.

Pumpkin’s perfect!

See if he likes being brushed - my floofy boy loves it.

It's not a legal requirement with cats - I have two cats, both rescues - and I'd advise getting a collar and ID disc for your cat with the same details as are required for a dog's ID disc - owner's surname, owner's address, pwner's phone number, Just in case Puss gows walkabout and gets lost - it's easier to identify a cat straught away of these details are on an ID disc worn round the cat's neck, as a microchip scanner may not readily be available.

If you get a collar, do make sure it’s a quick release one, so that if Pumpkin gets it caught on anything it will fall off quickly instead of strangling him. You’d think they’d all be quick release nowadays but they’re still not.

Yes, the rescue actually gave me a little ID badge for him and I've bought a quick release collar. We'll give it a go but I don't want to bother him with it just yet. I'm also going to get a cat flap installed. I'm thinking that a microchip one might be best? As I don't like the idea that other cats could come in otherwise.

Re the poo tray - I bought 2 waterproof bed mats from an online disability aids shop. They are washable and large enough to sit under the tray and catch litter and any stray wees. They can then go in the washing machine.

Has saved my floor a couple of times.

We have a microchip door and it works well 😬

How lovely to have a new cat ❤️

You may find that, depending on the type of cat litter you use, the cat scatters the ususedlitteer over quite a wide area so a hooded litter box may be more practical.
I also have a rescue dog, who gets on fine with my two rescue cats, but who took an unhrealthy interest in the solid waste in the cat litter trays when I used the normal open litter trays. I therefore changed to the hooded litter boxes for the cats, and the dog has shown no interest in the contents of these.

Feed the cat at set times of the day - give or take 30 mins - that way, he'll get into a routine.
Keep him in all night (even more important now, with fireworks going off).

Don't bother with collars - cats manage to get them caught or take them off.
Provide wet and dry food.
Keep the litter tray clean and fresh. Cats won't use a wet or dirty one.
Provide blankets for him to sleep on, about 3 in different places in the home. Settee, spare room, end of your bed, for example.
Ensure the cat has safe and quiet areas to get away to, from children/other pets/noise.

Had many cats over 44 years, had current (was a stray) cat for 8 weeks.

He's a beautiful cat, by the way, and I love his name
