Cat being sick

Leftittothelastminute · 15/08/2024 12:25

My cat (age 12) has started being sick at least twice a day. He is using the litter tray as normal and appears not to be in any pain (purring etc). I have booked him into the vets for early next week (next available appointment) but I just wondered if anyone had any advice in the meantime? Thanks

Forgot to say, he is an indoor cat if that makes a difference

Good to get him checked out by the vet's. In the meantime, have you tried using a cat probiotic? One of mine used to throw up pretty frequently (2-3 x week, rather than per day) and a probiotic sprinkled on his food for a few weeks seems to have sorted him out. It could also be the food he's eating, if it's too acidic.

We had bouts of vomiting with our ten-year-old girl and were back and forth to the vet over about nine months. She was otherwise absolutely "well" and happy and the vets were never concerned and said it was just hairballs. When it became daily I pushed for further tests and it actually was something more serious. I think the vets were blindsided by the fact she appeared completely fine otherwise, and had actually gained weight between appointments because she was a greedy wee monkey and would literally puke then run straight to her dish shouting for more food.

Hopefully it is nothing to worry about in your case but I wouldn't be fobbed off if we were in that position again with our new boy.

Did you just have to sprinkle the probiotic for a couple of weeks and that sorted the sickness permanently?

My cat throws up around 2-3 times a week and I’ve never known whether to be concerned or not. Told the vet at her most recent checkup and she didn’t seem too concerned, but this sounds interesting!

My one is also a greedy so and so...... I will keep this in mind when we take him to the vets! Thank you.

Thank you. Probiotics have been purchased and will start this tonight!

I tend to add a little bit extra water to our cats food if one of them throws up just to make sure they stay hydrated. One of them sometimes does because he will eat anything that looks or does not look like food.

When our girl was throwing up daily it turned out to be stomach cancer.

Not to worry you but do get it checked out

Same - intestinal lymphoma. I’d never heard of it but apparently one of the most common reasons for cats being pts.

How long has it been going on for?

It could be that he has a hairball stuck somewhere, mine will go through periods of daily vomiting and then a massive hairball will appear on the carpet 😂

You can get hairball "paste" to help dissolve them - the vet will sell it but it's probably cheaper on Amazon!
