Adopted by a lost cat

Last night our kids found a small black cat in our garden. She has a collar but it's scratched up and there are no details on it. The kids gave her some water and dry food as she looked very hungry and she wolfed down both. Our own cat rarely drinks water (or not in front of us) so she was presumably quite dehydrated in the hot weather.

The kids immediately fell in love with her, of course. We thought she might be gone this morning but she was still in the garden. DH and DD took her to the vet this morning to see if she had a microchip and for a check over. It turns out she is ok but less than a year old.

Apparently, if noone claims her in 7 days, she's ours, and should be chipped and (though I don't know if the vet said this) i guess neutered. Apparently the vet couldn't tell if that had already happened.

The children are doing posters for the local area today, and we will put details on local Facebook groups, but we're not sure what else to do to find her home?

We also have the issue of getting our cat (10 years old) to accept a new cat staying, even if only for a short while. We could leave the new one in the garden for now while the weather's ok - we already put out a blanket and a box for her to sleep in last night (short notice option), but is that terrible? I just feel we need to be careful our own cat isn't put out by being invaded in any way especially if it is only going to be for a few days. He goes out whenever we have human visitors and was rarely seen when DS was a baby, so is easily disturbed.

Also is there anything particular about female cats we should be aware of while we have her (other than the risk of pregnancy)? We've only ever had a male cat.

She is adorable and the kids are besotted but understand she may have a loving family somewhere missing her terribly.

Paper collar?

Put a little message on.
"is this your cat? Please call us on..."

Put your phone number etc.

Do you not have some Facebook Pet Alert in your area?

I don't know. I will check, thanks!

I think if there was going to be fisticuffs between her and your cat, it would have happened already and she wouldn't have stayed in the garden, so that probably isn't going to be too much of an issue.

Agree with others about the local facebook thing - I know somebody who found their cat after two months of him being MIA.

CatChant · 13/08/2024 21:03

Make sure you keep some identifying information back when advertising for her owners. Otherwise you run the risk of handing her over to some random who would harm her - there are some very horrible people in the world.

Do you have a shed or garage she could take shelter in at night for the moment while your own cat gets used to her?

It sounds like she’s fallen on all four feet with your family. Thank you for looking after her.

Fingers crossed you are right about the fisticuffs thing. Ours is staying in the house a lot at the moment - maybe protecting his territory, so she has free rein in the garden.

I will cover off the Facebook option tomorrow - we have been manic today and I haven't had a chance.

Jackson Galaxy has great videos on introducing cats:

Thanks for this. I will take a look (and get DD to watch too, as she is taking charge of the care and feeding of NewCat at the moment).

Thanks @CatChant . Hopefully she has, even if only for a little while. The kids are in love anyway. DS was so upset about her being alone in the garden tonight that I am currently sitting out here keeping her company. She is curled up behind me but the slugs are getting closer so I am not sure I can stay much longer 🤮.

Good point about holding some info back. The vet suggested that too. Awful to think there are people who would claim a cat just to mistreat her!

Any news on the owner OP ?

DazedandConfused1234 · 14/08/2024 23:14

Not yet. Someone did reply to the kids' posters but their cat was very different, sadly. Still keeping an eye on all the local Facebook groups, pet ones and others. The local vets have heard nothing. So many lost cats, which is awful, but they are all different too.

It's getting harder and harder to think of her going back now - I work in a room at the end of the garden and she spent the day popping in and and out. Unlike our cat, she is not meeting trained and walked all over my laptop, cutting off my calls, putting the laptop on airplane mode, and even drinking my coffee while I was on the phone (it was tepid luckily). She is adorable. Obviously, I hate to think of her family missing her though. It's going to be tough as the kids are besotted.

She sounds adorable. Rex has cut me off Teams calls and pressed send on a gobbledegook chat message more than once! Has shown his bumhole to a huge team meeting (so embarrassing) and spends a chunk of the day sitting on my knee with his chin on the mousepad. They are such good company.

If she has a collar she must have had owners but she obviously went missing before chipping & spaying. Maybe her owners will turn up which will be hard for you & kids but if not, what a lovely outcome for her to have found you all.

😂 his bumhole, brilliant! I shall look forward to that one!

We brought her in the house last night and DD holed her up in her room overnight with a litter tray, food, water and a bed so our cat wasn't put out. They did spend a little bit of time in the living room eyeing each other up, but no fisticuffs yet, thank goodness. DH reckons she hasn't slept properly for a while - probably on alert for foxes etc - but certainly she passed out almost instantly she was in DDs room so it seems like she now feels safe.

Just as well we brought her in it turned out, because I spotted a massive fox in our garden (I dont think I have seen one in there for years) which our, quite large, cat despatched immediately but NewCat wouldn't have stood a chance.

Each day that passes she is becoming more part of the family, so fingers crossed if her family do turn up, it will be soon.

@DazedandConfused1234 Have there been any updates?

DazedandConfused1234 · 22/08/2024 01:00

Hi @Cnon , not really. Nobody else has replied to the posters and I have seen no lost cat messages matching her description on social media despite joining all the local groups I could find.

We have a vet appointment for a couple of weeks' time, so that gives a bit more time for someone to come forward and claim her. She sleeps in the house at night and hasn't left our garden since we found her, so hopefully the chances of her getting pregnant in that time are slim, assuming she isn't already, which the vet didnt think she was.

She and our cat are rubbing along OK so far with only a couple of minor spats. She hisses at him a fair bit if he gets closer than she would like, but he mostly ignores her.

@TemporaryCatSlave have you considered one of these for Rex? (there are some interesting videos for this product!)

Just thought I would update. Nobody came forward to claim her, so we have now had her chipped and neutered and she is very much a part of the family. She is still quite put out following the op earlier this week, and our male cat is keeping his distance, but fingers crossed they will settle into a rhythm of some sort once she is fully recovered. Thanks to all who replied to my previous posts.

Oh sorry assumed you're a longtime Little tray poster/member.

It means please may we see some photos of your lovely new cat, and also of your older one so he doesn't feel left out. 🙂

Pixiedust1234 · 12/09/2024 13:06

You were very lucky if she hadn't been neutered 🙀

We had to neuter a starving stray quite quickly as she was yowling the place down. It now appears we also have a cat as she's refused to leave the house/garden.

Congratulations on your new kitty 💕

😁 oh I see! Absolutely. I will post some later as my son has better ones than I do.

Thank you for saying so. Fingers crossed she's happy here - at least she will be once she gets over our betrayal by taking her to the vet! DH and DS who collected her got a whole load of abuse apparently, but she seems to have forgiven them 😂

Thank you 🙂. She is adorable, and congratulations on your new kitty too! Ours did come into heat a few days ago, just before her op, which confused our (neutered) male cat, bless him, but, as she never leaves our garden, she managed to avoid getting pregnant which was really lucky!
