If so, how do I get it out? I've tried to pull gently but no give.

Did you try tweezers?

Newfluff · 11/08/2024 09:19

No don't pull or use tweezers.

Go to a pet shop/chemist and get a tick remover.

They are very cheap and you slide the legs under the body of the tick and then turn anticlockwise. This way you take it out alive so it doesn't regurgitate it's stomach contents into the blood stream or leave the head in the cat.

If you find one on a human, keep hold of the tick incase you develop a bullseye rash.

Thank you! I'll get one today.

Does it definitely look like a tick, though? Is there anything else it could be?
I did try tweezers.

Tick - they can be a variety of colours - from beige through to black.

You can twist off with teasers, (can't remember which way to turn!) but you are squeezing tick and then tick blood goes back into host. The tool you can get is fab and takes literally a second to do.

If cat (?) is on anti tick treatment then the ticks can still latch on but will basically die, dry up and drop off.

It is definitely a tick. You can smoother them in Vaseline and they suffocate and drop off.

No do not do this. It makes them burrow deeper in.
Don't use a lighter, or anything but a tick remover. In a cat it is better to leave it to drop off itself than risk it burrowing in/leaving the head in.

Obviously better to remove as you don't want it dripping off in your house.

Never use Vaseline or tweezers on a tick. You need a proper tick removal tool - they're only a pound or so.

You pop the tool around where the tick has latched on to your pet and twist gently - it might take a few goes. Make sure the head is out and give the injury site a quick clean too.
