What do you think about this menu for new cat?

Hello

I adopted a 12 year old female rescue 2 weeks ago. 6kg. Fairly sedentary so far. She's quite fussy on food. Doesn't like wet at all so far!

This is the daily menu we've sort of fallen into, what do you think? Too much/too little? Is the balance off?

Thanks

2 slices of ham
Small tin of tuna
Handful of dry food
A few dreamies

What do you think about this menu for new cat?

I know what you mean about the stress of a fussy eater!
Ham is too salty- cm squared piece max once a month!
I do give my cat tuna- in spring water - but only a little bit at a time- we might share a small tin for lunch. I do do also give her bits of cooked chicken or steam a bit of fish in the microwave for her (sometimes our dinner choices revolve around what the cat likes.
Wet food - you may find if she like tuna she likes fish based ones a lot of time it seems texture based- mine will lick the jelly off chunks in jelly but not eat the chunks but she will eat finer smaller flakes in gravy.
I know what you mean about biscuits and kidneys but I think you will have to have some out while you are changing her diet.

Thank you for adopting a senior lady. 😻

BobbyBiscuits · 02/08/2024 13:58

She needs more minerals and vitamins. Can you buy royal canin dry food? There's different types but my vet said you're not meant to give them mainly human food like tins of tuna and ham.
Maybe plain white fish, just lightly cooked in microwave? But I think you should look at the vet brand dried foods. You can buy them online from vet UK etc.

ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps · 02/08/2024 16:15

Thanks everyone.
Vet said to drop the ham and give a little tuna twice a week.
And not to worry if she insists on dry food for the bulk of her diet

My fussy cat likes purizon dried cat food. It’s dry but much wetter than regular dried food. Ie you can kind of squish with your fingers. So not a problem with kidneys. He has in auto dispenser so unlimited

He will also only eat the fillet chicken in broth type cat food if wet . Applaws usually. I give one each evening.

@Breadcat24 glad to see I'm not the only person who "shares a tin of tuna" with my cat. Fun times! :-D

She might like a daily tin of Untamed/Thrive complete/Applaws/Fish4Cats - they all look and smell like tinned fish, but are complete foods.
Mine love the fish varieties. I rinse the tin out with a little water, and they lap that up, too.

serialcatbuyer · 03/08/2024 01:09

I don't really agree that cats should have processed food over just meat. It's what they would have naturally. Maybe add in some chicken

sashh · 03/08/2024 06:04

I'd swap the ham for another meat, I know all cats love ham but it isn't great for them and the tuna should be a treat as others have said.

My local butcher will give you a bag of offcuts of cooked meat. Useful for the cat and the local hedgehog population.

Mine likes to have a bit of chip shop fish (taken out of the batter).

Try her with fresh moist (steam it, boil it, braise it, use the juices) chicken and brown rice. Unsalted. Chicken broth, again unsalted, add garden peas and broccoli too. Both safe to feed to cats.

You might be surprised.

I’d be bloody surprised if I had the time for this.
We have had a dozen cats over the years, all reaching healthy old age on a mixture of dry and wet cat food, supplemented by the occasional small creature they catch themselves.

Unless you can provide brain, heart, liver kidneys etc. providing just muscle meat is not what a cat would have naturally and it lacks nutrients that they need.

Once a week our five cats share a Tim in Spring water.
We call it tuna Tuesday.

SweetLining · 03/08/2024 07:19

Beautiful girl!
If she was on dry food at the rescue, I would be continuing with that as I imagine it's what she's used to.

Be careful, Applaws wet food is a complementary, not complete food. They need a dry food addition to support all the nutrients.

ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps · 01/08/2024 22:23

Wet food is supposedly better for cats' kidneys. A lot of cats get kidney disease as they get older. And cats are notoriously bad for not drinking enough water.

It's also though dry food can be too calorific and cats (especially if mine does stay mostly indoors and sedentary) can get too fat.

This does not apply to the modern high quality dry foods. As long as cats have plenty of access to fresh clean water there is not an issue with a dry food diet.
I glad you have decided to drop the ham - one slice would be roughly the equivalent to a Big Mac for us.

CurlewKate · 03/08/2024 08:23

Well, it doesn't really matter, does it? She's obviously not going to eat anything else now! Unless you add a little poached free range chicken or salmon.....

spikeandbuffy · 03/08/2024 09:32

The other thing I do to get more wet food into my car is he gets bit of mine
I tried raw food, various types and he won't eat it
Yet he will eat bits I've cut off chicken or minced chicken or turkey Confused so I give him that (raw)

Caspianberg · 03/08/2024 09:45

@Ilovemyshed - I know applaws wet is complementary. That’s fine when they are eating the dried version for most calories. Mine gets purizon or applaws dried which are both complete. Then gets the wet once a day to add a bit more liquid as he won’t eat any other wet

Slices of ham are about as processed as food gets though and isn’t processed with cat nutrition in mind

ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps · 03/08/2024 18:03

Thanks everyone, this is all v helpful. Especially the point about muscle meat vs heart, kidneys etc. I didn't know that.

I've bought Purina One and Appleaws at Pets at Home today as it's 2 mins from me so was easy to pick up.
I'll get the Scrumbles when I'm next at Tesco as I can see they stock it.
And then I will proceed through all the other suggestions one by one as some of them I will need to order from Zooplus by the looks of it.

Aye, there will be a lot less ham in her future!!

spikeandbuffy · 03/08/2024 18:06

My local rescue centre was very happy to take the foods mine rejected Grin
There was a lot of "ooh this looks posh, what a picky cat"

CurlewKate · 03/08/2024 18:08

I have had 4 cats who have all lived past 20 on a diet of Whiskas, whatever dry food is cheapest and the occasional bit of human food. And the odd mouse, rat or pigeon or two. Big business has really got its teeth into pet owners!

Ilovemyshed · 03/08/2024 07:45

Op's cat is currently eating almost exclusively dry, so any tin would be in addition to a complete food.
Mine mostly have Untamed, but I'll order a pack of Applaws or Thrive from Amazon, if they get low in between deliveries.

dementedpixie · 03/08/2024 18:14

My local tesco has an SSPCA donation bin so they've had a wide variety of donations when my cats turn their nose up at my terrible offerings
