So of course, it's early Sunday morning in a small rural town with no emergency vet...and I might be over-reacting anyway. My little Maisie, about 6-7 months old and normally bursting with life and joy, has been off-colour for the last 18 hours or so. Vomited once, then became floppy and lethargic, very sleepy, i sat up part of the night with her, and she was grinding her teeth and with a long drool coming from her mouth. Refusing food and water, but has just got up and used her litter tray- a good-sized wee, first in 18 hours, now lying down again. Doing her best to purr on stroking. i wondered at first whether she might have been poisoned, but there was only the one vomit. Now I'm thinking constipated as her tummy is quite distended. Can any kind person think of anything else it might be? Thank you so much.

Perhaps it's relevant...Friday morning she was out with the older cat mousing in the woodpile. There's absolutely no poison on our place, but we do have mice...and four cats to keep them down. Could the consumption of a mouse affect her insides when she's not done it before?

You need to get her to an emergency vet as she may well have ingested something poisonous .

Countrygirlxo · 20/07/2024 21:02

She sounds quite unwell, you need to get her to a vet

QuestionableMouse · 20/07/2024 21:02

Seconding the emergency vet. It could be a gut blockage which can be fatal if untreated.

Allthislovelygreen · 20/07/2024 21:03

It does sound a bit like a poisoning, bearing in mind stupid people do stupid things like chuck out poisons such as rodenticide and insecticide loose in their gardens, so she could have eaten a poisoned mouse or slug.

It might just be because it's so hot though, my cat is very lethargic these past two days.

Personally I would take her to the vets asap if you suspect poisoning, time is of the essence

Thank you so much for your responses. I'll see what I can find in the way of a vet...might have to travel quite a distance, but my Maisie is worth it.

Back from vet, Maisie has burned her tongue on something hot or caustic...no idea what. Full of painkillers, eating tuna and cream like a horse! Many thanks again!

Oh goodness! I suspect caustic as I am not aware of cats licking something so hot they would get burnt (but willing to be disproved). Also I am aware of cats licking stuff that turns out to be harmful, like antifreeze.....
Poor cat! And poor you!
So is the plan to keep up with the painkillers and let her self-heal?
Glad she has her appetite back!
Keep us updated please!🐈

Poor Maisie !

But I bet you are relieved you took her and you have the answer .
Painkillers doing their job and hopefully she's on the mend .

One of our cats (adults) chucked up some breakfast with half a slug Envy in it . Don't know if they only ate half or only half got chucked up . (DH was the one to find it)
Both of them are their usual selves but with all the poisoning of slugs I'm keeping a close eye on them.

She probably licked someone’s bbq grill. We had one that did that

Very glad to hear she's okay, but please, if there's a next time where you're worried about her, don't leave it so long before taking Maisie to the vet.

QuestionableMouse · 20/07/2024 23:58

Cream is terrible for cats and will likely give her an upset stomach. Glad she's okay but don't feed cats dairy!

pollyglot · 21/07/2024 00:18

Thank you for all the helpful advice, everyone. Maisie is lying by the fire (it's winter here, as they laughingly call it, 17 deg c, but she wants the warmth), with a full tummy and much love. I'll remember the no-cream advice, too, thank you!
