Don't want cat in bedroom

I have adopted a new cat. He's 11 and he's been with me for one day only. We're bonding well, he's playing, grooming himself, very affectionate.

I left my bedroom door open. Unfortunately, he would not settle and kept wanting to play and knock things off my bedside table. I've just shut him out in the landing. However, I'm worried that doing this is not kind.

Is it OK to not let cats into your bedroom at night?

Nope, he’ll get used to that and find somewhere else to sleep.

I currently have a broken foot, I chucked the cat out of the bedroom an hour ago because he decided to pounce on my foot repeatedly. He's now asleep on the landing, I'm still wide awake....
Don't feel bad for the cat.

Ouch! Hope your foot is ok after that! Get well ❤️‍🩹 soon

Beautiful cat OP , agree with others, insist on the comfy cat bed on landing or other space.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 13/07/2024 06:13

Currently in bed - just joined by a purring cat who made sure I was wide awake by pacing and miaowing at me before settling down (in a position that prevents me from moving).
You learn to live with it 🤣

It is fine. I do not want a cat jumping round my head all night. He does come in during the day if he wants. Hate the summer where my bedroom window is open and he comes in the from the outside … stands on the window ledge and takes a running jump into the middle of the bed at 2am.

He isn’t restricted any other way. But I need my sleep and he would keep me awake all night.

ricecrispiecakes · 13/07/2024 08:33

Mine are all shut downstairs at night and it's been that way since the day they came home.

As long as they have water and access to their litter trays, they'll be fine. We don't give ours food overnight as our oldest is on a diet and would eat the lot 😂

Julyshouldbesunny · 13/07/2024 08:36

You must take your new post seriously op. If not your dcat may move on to a more amiable boss....
Seriously I can't sleep with the noisey buggars in the room. Our boy is far too loud. Purring and meowing... No way.

Julianne65 · 13/07/2024 09:30

Our adopted cat loves to pee on our bed. We gave her three chances and when she peed on the bed while we were on it that was the last straw. She’s not allowed in at all now and she’s knows it. She started trying to get in but now she accepts it. She had a super comfy bed on the landing just outside the room and she loves it.

mondaytosunday · 13/07/2024 11:18

My cats are allowed in there during the day, but at night they are confined downstairs as otherwise I'd have a 5am alarm! They are used to it (they don't rush to the hall door when I start turning off the lights etc).
Your cat will too.

TemporaryCatSlave · 13/07/2024 12:38

Fine to ban them from the bedroom. Rex sleeps with me most night but is chucked out if being too pouncy on toes, walking all over my head or generally being naughty i.e. knocking stuff off dresser or side table.

He meows piteously outside the door for a while then stalks off the the lounge and sleeps on the sofa. I may get a sulk in the morning but that's a small price to pay for a good nights sleep.

One thought though, play with him for a while before bedtime and wear him out a bit. Rex is usually only naughty at night when he has too much energy so tiring hm out helps him calm down.

Floralnomad · 13/07/2024 12:40

Stick him a bed on the landing .

Just wanted to say that is a very cute cat you have there@Bookridden , hope you have many happy years together 😻

learieonthewildmoor · 14/07/2024 21:43

Our first cat slept in the laundry every night quite happily. She’d walk in and curl up in her bed every night.
Current cats sleep in the bedroom but they’re really settled at night and don’t get up until we do. Cat One will cry at the door if we try to keep him out, the big tragic.
If you start with them out/in, that’s what they go on with.

Canthave2manycats · 16/07/2024 00:10

Give him plenty of other options to sleep elsewhere! Despite having three cats I am actually allergic to them and there's no way I could have them sleep in my bed. My DD has one of them sleep with her and her sleep is so disturbed, I just couldn't!!

So kind of you to adopt an 11 year old kitty! x

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 16/07/2024 00:15

Ours are allowed in as a treat -
normally not as they are a pain in the arse

teach them early and they’ll be no bother when you chuck them out for the night

Mooche · 16/07/2024 01:08

Mines allowed to sleep either on the end of my bed or on a chair in my room. However she does sometimes pounce on my feet, climb on my head, start rummaging loudly through cupboards or boxes at 2am or generally meowing all night. When that happens she's locked in the kitchen :) (access to food, water and litter tray) and she settles quickly there
