My cat will just not shut up and it’s driving me mad!

This is actually having a negative impact on my mental health now because I work from home and it’s very distressed and frustrating to hear your cat crying all day long every day.

From the moment she wakes up. DP has to put her outside when he leaves for work at 5am because otherwise she wakes me up with her shouting. When I see her sat on the windowsill to come in my heart sinks lately and I feel awful for it! It’s just that I can’t take another day of her constant meows. I feed her 4 wet pouches a day plus dry food and she is overweight. I wanted to try and tackle this by putting her on diet food and have the royal canin one but it’s not working because she eats too much of it to make a difference. The meowing is relentless. As soon as she’s finished eating she’s back to meowing at me again. People say leave dry food down all day but I can’t because she eats the whole bowl and still wants more. She doesn’t graze.

things I have tried:

  • ignoring the screaming in hopes she will eventually stop (she just doesn’t, it’s constant)
  • playing with her and cuddling her and seeing if those are the things she wants instead
  • vet check. Perfectly healthy and up to date with vaccinations, flea and worming
  • switched her to a high quality high protein food. Although expensive I am willing to take the hit if it works. But it doesn’t
  • I’ve recently changed to royal canin obesity control (she isn’t obese but she is overweight) in hopes that it would be more filling?

My male cat is not like this at all. He is twice the size of her and doesn’t eat anywhere near as much!

Please help, what can I do?! I can’t take every day of constant crying anymore. I want her to be a healthy weight and I’m trying my best to try and get it under control but her appetite is out of hand and I just want to be able to work from home or read or watch a movie with DP without the constant meowing. Im unable to enjoy my cat and unable to enjoy my time in the house. I love leaving the house to get away from the noise 😢

My cat would eat wet food until she vomited. Ex feral kitten who turned up one day. So in the morning she gets a wet pouch. After that it's dry food which she's not impressed with but will eat in the evening.

Going out is more stimulation than indoors so I'd put her outside more.

I’d cut out wet food over a few weeks. Full of salt & affects kidneys, try dry only. Don’t keep moving food/water it’s stressful for cats. Get down to 1 litter tray and don’t move it. Try a cat sized box with a hole in the side and a fluffy cushion inside, she might need a secure small space to go to if overwhelmed by outside space.

Don't know where you got your information from but dry only diet is bad for kidneys not wet food. And in a multi cat household there should be a minimum of 1 litter tray per cat plus one in different locations.

The secure space is correct though.

What do you mean by moving food? Do you mean changing to different types?

I can’t go down to 1 litter box because I have 2 cats. All three of them stay in the same space, I never move them around

Don't follow that advice.

You should have litter trays in more than one location though if you have more than one cat. Try putting a litter tray in another room. If you use hooded litter trays, try using one that isn't covered in the other location. You might not see it but there may be litter tray guarding occurring or the location of your current trays feels exposed.

Interactive toys, such as balls that move on their own or auto laser lights might help entertain her. Use puzzle feeders and treat balls so she has to work for to get some dry food.

A large cat tree and boxes she can hide in, if you have the space cat walks up high such as rope ladders or sitting shelves and hammocks may also help. Scatter some dry food around the house tharvshe has to hunt to find it rather than put it in a bowl.

Hopefully some of that will help.

My old cat was like this but not really over food, more that he never had an unspoken thought in his head Grin

I now have a silent cat and it's very odd! Puzzle feeders definitely worth a try, I have a couple off Amazon that my cat really enjoys and also a slow feeder bowl

Sorry if this gas already been said but has she had her thyroid tested?
Could be affecting her appetite and I read something once about it making cats very vocal.

The vet said this about mine
Little git cost me a fortune to be told he had incredible bloods for his age and he was just noisy
He yelled at me to agree

Lol cats eh?

It's a good point though, mine got very greedy when she developed a thyroid issue

Emmanuelll · 12/07/2024 12:10

We have ragdolls and two of them can be like this but it tends to be a phase that they do on and off.

justasking111 · 12/07/2024 13:38

We've a cat that has become vocal with age. She was silent for the first nine years as a feral kitten. Now if you talk to her she talks back

BlunderMifflin · 12/07/2024 14:42

Just adding to the two or three posts mentioning thyroid issues. If your vet didn't do a blood test for hyperthyroidism then I would strongly advise it. It's quite common in cats and it makes them ravenously hungry all the time no matter how much you feed them and it makes them loud and shouty and never shut up!! With our cat it also made him have an abundance of energy and another symptom that not all cats get is panting like a dog.

Mine was diagnosed last autumn. If it is that, they will give you medication but ask for the prescription and you can get it way cheaper online.
Sadly, the meds haven't stopped my cat being shouty, but that may be because he has become deaf recently so is trying to hear his own voice 😆
