Petsafe Microchip Catflap

CatMumSlave · 11/07/2024 13:04

I assumed the guy fitting it would know but he didn't have a clue.

How can I tell if my cats are registered to it as they aren't using it yet.

Thanks.

Put the cat near it and it should click when the chip is recognised and it opens the flap.

CatMumSlave · 11/07/2024 13:08

Hi. The red light flashed but I hold the flap open myself as they won't go near it.

One won't even let me put her close.

You register their chips to it. It will have a "register" mode. When that's on put cat's head in and it will register. Then take it out of "register" mode. There are usually instructuons with it.

Dolphinnoises · 11/07/2024 13:09

Surely it comes with an instructions leaflet? Or even easier there’ll be a nice cat owner on YouTube with an annoyed-looking cat roped in to demonstrate?

CatMumSlave · 11/07/2024 13:09

Looked on YouTube. They say to put the cat near it before it's put in the door 🤦‍♀️

OP posts:
Refugenewbie · 11/07/2024 13:11

Our cat used it as a little window.

I once pushed the front half of her through it out of sheer frustration to show her it was a door. She stood there half in and half out until rescued.

CatMumSlave · 11/07/2024 13:13

It's in a glass door so I had to have it done by a window and door company and have hardened glass put in. He put the cat flap in the glass before he brought it round the back. Gave me the leaflet. Said not to ask him even though he's fitted loads according to their website.

I'm just unsure how I know it's registered.

I can't put them in it without holding it open myself you see.

My new door was fitted with the catflap in place. We used tape to hold it open for a while as 1 of my cats wasn't keen on using it. You have to post them through it to register them

You can still register them. Put it in register mode, go outside with the cat and stick their head in it. That will register them.

dementedpixie · 11/07/2024 13:15

Use sellotape to hold the flap open so you have both hands free to manhandle your reluctant cat 😆

Hi yes but do they definitely have to open it themselves?? I can't? The boy won't move his legs into it.

The girl won't go anywhere near it 😂😂

dementedpixie · 11/07/2024 13:18

One of mine uses his head to open in and the other uses his paw. Sometimes he rattles it a few times with his paw before going through.

Can you post a picture of the catflap. Does it have a dial to turn to lock and unlock it?

dementedpixie · 11/07/2024 13:19

Ah it's a sureflap one I've got so yours will be different

Lellochip · 11/07/2024 13:23

It should unlock as they get close to it (I've got a different brand but assume it's similar) - if you shove their heads right up to the flap do you hear any clicks or see any lock move?

When you're registering the chip I don't see that it matters if they go through themselves or you post them through

dementedpixie · 11/07/2024 13:26

This says it should unlatch during the registering process. Have you turned the lock to 'in and out'?

The cat flap will be factory pre-set in the locked position. Ensure the manual lock is set to the In and Out position (See Fig. H on page 7).

  1. Remove the battery cover, set aside the provided hardware pack, and install 4 high quality alkaline AA batteries (LR6). The green LED light will flash three (3) times which indicates that the cat flap is in Automatic Mode.
  1. To enter Learn Mode, press and hold the button in the battery compartment until the red LED light appears (about 5 seconds). You will
have 60 seconds to position the cat’s head in the tunnel to learn the microchip ID. *Once the cat flap has learned the microchip ID, it will unlatch and the red LED will turn off*.

The cat flap will stay in Automatic Mode and will re-latch after 3 seconds

CatMumSlave · 11/07/2024 13:27

Hi yes it's definitely on in and out

I assumed I could go to bed early tonight without waiting up for the cats 🤣🤣

I remember trying to tempt the cats through with dreamies. One of mine took a few weeks to get to grips with it

CatMumSlave · 11/07/2024 13:48

I've tried treats. Thanks all.

OP posts:
Mumsgirls · 11/07/2024 13:54

My large boy won’t use mine if I am home, but will use it to come or go when I am out. On the sureflap, the sensor is at the top, so cat’s head/ neck to go under that, you will hear a click as it opens, some cats are a bit afraid of the click.
Good luck with it

I did this^
Use sellotape to hold the flap open, put treats on the other side

... gradually lower the flap over time

But yes easier to register before installing

I've recently trained one of our cats to use the chip - reading feeding machine. She was scared at first and wouldn't go near it. It took about 3 weeks in training mode. First , I left the flap over the bowl open all the time, feeding mornings and evenings. When she went to eat, at some point, I put the machine in registering mode and got her chip registered. From then on, I put the training mode on. First the flap only moved a little for the first week. After a week or so, I switched to the next level and the flap moved more . And so on. The cat now eats from the machine without problems. I could probably shorten the "open after leaving" time now.

I think it's important to let them get acquainted with the machine first, so if you leave the flap in the door open all day, they will start using the hole at some point. Only then put the flap in registering mode to grab their chip no. Now start the learning mode (hopefully the flap has one). They might scare a little at first , when the flap moves a little instead of closing fully, but will get used to it. Then you can move to the next step, and let the flap close a bit further.

Take time, don't pressure the cats. My kid grabbed the cat and put her head into the arch of the machine to register her chip. The cat bolted and it took a while for her to go near the machine again. Treats will probably help :-).

MerelyPlaying · 15/07/2024 14:37

I’m assuming they have used a catflap before, it’s not completely new to them?

Start by taking the batteries out so it doesn’t click, peg it open with clothes pegs, and let them go in and out.

Once they are used to it, put the batteries in so they hear it click, but keep the pegs on. Once they’ve got used to that, take the pegs off. They will learn quickly once they’re hungry!

The microchip one is the best thing ever, I bought mine after I had a fox coming in through the catflap. No, I didn’t believe that was possible either until I saw it in my kitchen!

@MerelyPlaying

Hi no they are 5 years and 10 months and I've not had a cat flap before.

The youngest is using it now. Just the eldest.

It doesn't help that it's too high for then so I've made steps with plant pots 😂😂

MerelyPlaying · 15/07/2024 16:35

Just take it slowly, I've never had one that didn't cotton on eventually, even cats adopted at 7 or 8 that had never used one. And yep, I've been there - breeze blocks outside the door .... the entire house is designed around the cats' needs, not mine!
