Successful cat diet?

Hi Everyone

I’m looking for some advice to help me and help my cat.

He’s a beautiful 8 year old house cat (vets advice after an injury) but he’s putting on so much weight. I know this is from being sedentary but he’s also the greediest cat I’ve ever known. He’s had tests and there is nothing wrong with him. The vet said he’s just a cat who really likes his food. They’ve given me the usual advice. Feed him at the same time every day and weigh out his food, don’t give him too many treats and play with him for excercise. The problem is his interest for playing lasts all of about 5 seconds and then he starts screaming for food, to the point he actually sounds distressed and I cave and give him a dreamy and the cycle continues.

I love him so much, and I want to help him. He’s not a youngster anymore and I’m worried about his heart. I want him to live a long and happy life. Has anyone successfully managed to bring down a greedy house cat’s weight, and have any tips on how to do it? He isn’t an only cat by the way before anyone suggests getting another to play with. His lovely twin brother is also here, who is a healthy weight even though he’s basically a house cat as well (doesn’t enjoy going out apart from the odd wander into the garden) but they are past the age of wrestling together. Any advice is appreciated

My cat is 11 and also an indoor cat ( by choice ) they are also prone to be overweight.
For the past 6 months they have been on Katkin , and we have been happy with her wellbeing on it.

Our boy is very food driven and was 1kg overweight. A lot for such a small animal. We put him on 100g wet food over 2 meals and he was back within a healthy weight in 4 weeks. He did cry a lot for more food, but eventually he grew to accept it.

You do give him only wet food, don‘t you? For us cutting out his one dry meal a day and replacing it with wet was the key - the dry was too easy for him to snarf down. Have you tried food specially for castrated cats, which tends to be better for cats who move less? And another tip would be to mix the wet food with a bit of water to give it more bulk and fill him up easier.

I second katkin. Depends what you’re feeding him but it might be that he’s not getting enough protein and doesn’t feel satisfied, plus he a bit of a foodie! Katkin is pure meat with no filler. Also look at Jackson Galaxy’s tips on how to get your cat to play.

The Katkin is looking really good, he does get a small amount of biscuits per day along with the wet. They’re a special dietary kind so not a cheap brand. They both love the biscuits but if the Katkin can help keep the greedy ones weight down and also improve digestion as I’ve read it can, I will give it a go without the biscuits.
