New (first) cat - what sort of bed?

I read somewhere it is better to buy a plastic bed with a cushion & cover which can be washed, rather than trying to wash a whole bed, but how often does the bed need washing?
If we went that route I've found a bed which seems a good size but I can't find a cushion which fits.

Mine sleep on the sofas, in our beds, one sleeps in an old hamper I put on top of a wardrobe! If you leave a cardboard box out for a second one of them is in it. None of them will go near a cat bed! Save your money. I once had a lovely round weaved rattan type Indian stool and that was a favourite until it fell apart.
Best purchase is a couple of good scratching posts and anti scratch spray for the sides and underneath your sofas.

Mine decides she will sleep somewhere and that is where she sleep for a couple of weeks.

I also have one who sleeps on the closed lid of the laptop. I put a small bed on the other side of my screen but it's almost never used, because they like the warmth of the laptop.

@Chester23 I think I have your cat's twin, with the 'mask' markings and black nose. I saw the picture and thought it was one of mine.

They are very similar arent they. When mine was young he was a lot lighter grey but it has darkened over time.

Anti-scratch spray? What is that and does it really work? My cats have taken to the edge of the sofa and ripped the stitching, it's really awful-looking. We have a scratching post too.

Iamthemoom · 07/07/2024 08:53

@AInightingale I bought it from Amazon - smells vile but yes it works if you put it on furniture before the cat accesses it or new furniture coming in. Once they've scratched it's too late. I have a sofa I live shredded underneath but my new sofas using the spray and putting a scratch post nearby haven't been touched.

AInightingale · 07/07/2024 09:17

Oh, okay too late for me then! Thanks @Iamthemoom

My old desk had a drawer, she would get in there (from the back) and go to sleep.

I'd open the drawer to get some paper and there she would be.

She also likes the Sky box as it is warm and at one stage slept on a bookshelf. I was apparently very unreasonable to not let her sleep in the washing machine.

Well after a rather stressful car journey (hot & traffic 😿) miss has been exploring downstairs, under both sofas, had her tea & is now asleep in the fruit box with a fluffy blanket (cute pic attached obvs)

Lovely to see. Have you fought over chosen a name for her yet or are you keeping her rescue name. She sounds like a confident girl and will have you all under her paw by tomorrow.

AInightingale · 07/07/2024 18:53

Looks very comfortable!

Another reason I'm not a fan of cushiony cat beds is that I'd imagine they get the washing machine full of cat hair, and are flea factories in between washes. Better off with a cheap blanket you can handwash/some old thing you can chuck out.

HelloCheekyCat · 07/07/2024 18:53

We’ve kept her name because she’s had it since she was born (we have her history) & it definitely suits her.
she’s just been lying in her box letting DH & I fuss her, she loves a chin rub 😻

Cat in a box, lovely.

Aww! All's right with the world! 😻

SummerBarbecues · 08/07/2024 19:09

Gorgeous 😍

HolyMoly24 · 08/07/2024 19:23

Ahh enjoy your new cat OP!

Our cat will not sleep on anything that has a 'roof' over her head, so no cat caves etc.

She likes the type of bed that is the cardboard scratch pad/beds you can pick up super cheap online.

However her favourite thing is to lie on us when we have fleecy blanket over our legs or on our chest to inhibit our breathing when we lie in bed Grin

Here is Mewler in her bed pretending to be a prawn. Get those cardboard scratching boxes, Mew loves them and they are cheap

Mine loves her round fluffy bed at the top of the stairs where she can keep an eye on everyone but her favourite place is a car seat on top of a high chest of drawers where she can meow loudly directly into your ear when you don't notice her, any cardboard box, in the bath, on your lap, in any clean washing and sometimes she is an unexpected item in the bagging area

That really is top quality prawning 🐈🦐

Davros · 09/07/2024 13:02

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats thank you. DD cut out the prawn cat and turned it into a sticker so I can text her to people

Breadcat24 · 09/07/2024 20:21

cat looks happy in non cat bed

HelloCheekyCat · 10/07/2024 09:14

Cat has also gravitated towards a dining chair & luckily chose the spare, it’s as if she knew 😻
she’s currently snoring away on the spare bed while I’m working (same room) but she did try to sit on my lap & desk/keyboard yesterday 🤣
she was cuddled up on the sofa with DH last night so she’s definitely exploring more
