Adopting a cat from Cats Protection

Hi all,
We want to get a cat and want to adopt a rescue, we've found one which seems ideal and want to register our interest but I don't know what the criteria is regarding leaving them home alone.
We'd get a microchip cat flap, and there would be 2 days a week when we'd both be in the office (other days WFH) but only for 6 hours (I'm PT). Would that be acceptable? I know dogs can't be left for that long but with access to the garden would it be ok for a cat?
Thanks

It's 10 years since we adopted ours but that wasn't an issue at all, we both worked (and still do) outside the home. We have a microchip catflap but they weren't allowed out at all in the first few weeks. We did take a bit of time off the first few days to keep an eye on them.

Cats are fine alone. We leave ours when we go on holiday for two weeks and our neighbours pop in to feed him.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 30/06/2024 09:39

2 days is fine, it’s likely the cat would like the time alone.

Julianne65 · 30/06/2024 15:27

Absolutely fine!

We got a dkitten from CPL 3 years ago. Neutering and chip costs included for £30 donation!

Hoppinggreen · 30/06/2024 15:29

I used to homecheck for CPL and that wouldn't have worried me

HelloCheekyCat · 30/06/2024 16:31

Thanks everyone!

We went to see the cat this afternoon and no concerns so we're picking her up next Sunday 😻
Now busily browsing Amazon for everything we need!

Now busily browsing Amazon for everything we need !

Well you're going to have to rephrase that to "Everything The Furry Overlord needs" Grin

And we need Cat-Tax or at least a description.

Beautifulbythebay · 30/06/2024 16:45

This was ours. Weighed 1kg!!

@70isaLimitNotaTarget this is the lady herself, she did come out of her bed but DD was hogging the fuss so I couldn’t get a photo 😻

@Beautifulbythebay what a little cutie!

We were ready to adopt again, and were worried about leaving a kitten alone for a few hours at a time, so we adopted a brother and sister from Cats Protection, (who were brilliant to deal with).
They too had a microchip cat flap once they'd been neutered/speyed.
But kittens grow into cats of course, and they don't need you in the same way that dogs do.
And we were happy that they'd have each other for company.
And after all that...........they don't like each other much at all! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 30/06/2024 18:24

Well, first you need a bed for DCat to ignore while they sleep on your bed/the top of the kitchen cupboard/in the airing cupboard.
Don't forget you also need plenty of toys to be left on the stairs and ignored in order for DCat to poke every pen you possess down that irritating gap at the back of the kitchen cupboard.

RumNotRun · 30/06/2024 19:06

@HelloCheekyCat ordering from Amazon is a good idea as the box will become the cat's favourite place to sleep. Don't worry about what you actually order as most of it will be sniffed then ignored.

HOWEVER Molly's Mice seem to be a consistent hit amongst the various cats of The Litter Tray.

Your new addition is gorgeous 😍

Our little madam is a CP cat. It’s got to the point that she’s either sleeping or out patrolling so she doesn’t care if we’re around or not. We only see her at meal times.

HelloCheekyCat · 01/07/2024 15:32

@RumNotRun we hardly ever get boxes from Amazon anymore unfortunately, just paper bags (see video 😆).
We do have a fruit cardboard box from the supermarket which we've saved for her 😻

I heard that about Amazon but much to my cats' relief, the depots round here haven't got the memo as the deliveries I have had recently all arrived in boxes. Then again one of my cats has a penchant for Amazon paper bags so she'd be happy either way 😁

I'm on my second CP rescue, having lost my first to old age after 12 wonderful years together. Both were very easy to adopt - as soon as they knew I was an experienced owner with garden access they were extremely keen for me to take them. Leaving them alone won't be a problem, unless like me you're doing a cat-to-cat intro. Dearly departed girl was an easygoing, chill cat, but she did have some health issues. New little one came home last week. Unfortunately I went a bit fast with the visual intro to my resident cat and she had a fear-agression reaction, so now we are back to just scent swapping until at least the end of the week. I live in a large, ground floor flat with plenty of big rooms and doors and direct access to the garden from my bedroom for resident cat, so I can do this. At the end of the week we'll do slow visual intro again. They know each other are around, and they smell each other's scents with no reaction, which is a good sign. I would advise you to plug in some feliway diffusers for at least a month - pricey, but IME they do make a big difference.

I think new girl may have been slightly misrepresented by CP - though of course, she's still very young and in a new situation. They said she was 1 - I'd be surprised, to be honest. I think she's 8 months at most. They described her as sweet and loving - she can be, but she's also rather feisty with a wild streak. She's clearly used to being outdoors, and a hunter - she's been sitting in the window swishing her tail and clicking at the birds. I've never had a hunty cat before so bit apprehensive about that, but well, she's my cat now. She's very beautiful, I must say, like a little statue of Bastet.

PortiasBiscuit · 02/07/2024 06:19

Don’t tell them, just say you work from home. The cat will be fine.

iloveeverykindofcat · 02/07/2024 06:29

Here's a picture of the little one when the devil was peeping out of her (she does have a sweet side too).
